My Pick
The 35-year-old Collazo is 36-7 with 19 Kos to his name and he may have some ring rust since this is his first fight in about 18 months. He’s a solid veteran and former WBA world champion (2005) who can’t be taken lightly even though he’s in the twilight of his career. He also has plenty of experience against top boxers such as Thurman, Ricky Hatton, Victor Ortiz, Andre Berto, Amir Khan and Shane Mosley. He lost unanimous decisions to Khan, Berto, Mosley and Hatton while he stopped Ortiz. He was stopped himself by Edwin Cassiani in 2002 and by Thurman.
He’s got a good chin though as Thurman was the first man to stop him in 12 years. Collazo can be an exciting fighter and is quite durable, but he doesn’t have the power needed to stop elite boxers. He’s a good southpaw who likes to land the lead right hook whenever he gets the chance. He can’t afford to leave himself open when attacking though or he’ll be tattooed with a quick barrage of punches. Collazo has 256 rounds under his belt since turning pro in 2000 and his Knockout ratio currently stands at 44 per cent. He stands 5-feet-9-inches tall and has a 72-inch reach.
The 30-year-old Vasquez has an impressive mark of 21-1 with 15 Kos. He’s 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 71-inch reach. He’s boxed 98 rounds since turning pro in 2012, but hasn’t really fought anybody of note though other than Diaz and Aron Martinez. He’s definitely got some power in his punches with a current knockout ratio of 68 per cent. Vasquez has been a pro for almost five years after serving and boxing in the Army. Collazo isn’t the most powerful puncher, but Vasquez will need to make sure he doesn’t walk into a shot.
Prediction…
This fight was originally scheduled for last year, but Collazo had to pull out due to injury. Vasquez will be trying to bounce back from his loss to Diaz and he should be successful either by decision or late stoppage.
A good matchup, but the advantage goes to the younger Vasquez
