My Pick
Tapia enters the fight at 23-3 along with 15 Kos, but while he’s just 27 years old he’s been struggling lately with two straight fourth-round knockout losses and three defeats in his past six bouts. He stands 5-foot-11 and has a wingspan of 73 inches and moved up to the middleweight division against Lemieux from junior middleweight. Tapia has 102 rounds under his belt since turning pro in 2008 and his current knockout ratio stands at 58 per cent.
He has decent power, but his chin is definitely a question mark right now. His three losses were all stoppages and came against Lemieux, Michel Soro in May of 2015 and to James Kirkland in six rounds in December of 2013. He’s fan friendly as his last five wins have all been by stoppage and his last eight bouts have ended before the final bell, with three of them being defeats.
Tapia’s been in his share of wars and could be somewhat shot at this point because of it. He needs to keep his hands up for defensive purposes and has to keep Quigley on the back foot by pressuring him at all times. He also needs to keep the fight in the centre of the ring and off of the ropes. Tapia has fallen short when he’s stepped up in class as his wins have been against Grade B opponents. But it would be a stretch to call Quigley a Grade A opponent at this point.
The 25-year-old Quigley, who now fights out of California, has a perfect mark of 12-0 along with 10 Kos, so he seems to have better than average power in his fists with a knockout ratio of 83 per cent. Quigley’s a decent sized middleweight at 6-feet tall and has a reach of 72 inches. He turned pro back in 2014 and has just 30 rounds of experience since then, but had an extensive and successful amateur career. His biggest pro wins have been against Melendez and a 10-round unanimous decision against James De la Rosa last May.
Prediction…
Tapia really needs a win here or his career will officially be entering its twilight period. He’s a good boxer with power, but with the way his chin’s been letting him down lately combined with Quigley’s power it looks like he has a very tough task in front of him. This should be an entertaining fight for as long as it goes, but I think Quigley will take it.
Tapia’s been on the downslide over the past year or so.
