Jermall Charlo vs Jorge Sebastian Heiland Preview July 29th
Unbeaten Jermall Charlo of Richmond, Texas will be taking on Jorge Sebastian Heiland of Argentina at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York this Saturday July 29th in a WBC middleweight elimination bout. The 12-round bout can be seen live on Showtime in the U.S while fans in the UK can catch the action on Sky Sports. Charlo last fought in December when he beat Julian Williams via a fifth-round stoppage. Heiland’s last contest was in April when he stopped Mateo Damian Veron in the eighth round.

Charlo is a former IBF Jr. Middeweight Champion who defended the belt three times after winning it by stopping Cornelius Bundrage in the third round in September, 2015. The 27-year-old ex-champion enters the contest with a perfect record of 25-0 along with 19 Kos. He stands 6-feet-tall and has a reach of 73.5 inches. Charlo s on quite a roll as he’s stopped 17 of his last 19 opponents. He has 111 rounds under his belt since turning pro in 2008, but this will be his first outing as a middleweight.
Charlo has very good power in his fists as his current knockout ratio now stands at 76 per cent. However, it could be argued that the only Grade A boxers he’s met so far have been Williams, Austin Trout and Bundrage, who was 42 when Charlo beat him for the title. Charlo hasn’t exactly been clashing with top-notch boxers, but has been overpowering just about everybody he’s faced lately. Still, it would be a stretch to consider Heiland as a Grade A opponent.
Charlo has displayed fine speed and boxing skills, but his chin has yet to be tested. He’s a strong, offensive-minded boxer who would rather his fights didn’t reach the scorecards. His only other notable win so far has been against Antwone Smith. And although he’s beaten a world champion in Bundrage and former world champion in Trout, Charlo hasn’t proven to the fans to be an elite boxer as of yet and they probably won’t change their opinion of him with a win over the relatively unknown Heiland either.
The 30-year-old Heiland is a southpaw who climbs into the ring with a record of 29-4-2 with 16 Kos. His height and reach aren’t listed, but he turned pro back in 2007 and has 233 rounds under his belt since then. He’s got experience, but the only opponent most fans will recognize is Matthew Macklin, who Heiland stopped in the 10th round in 2014. He’s also taken on Sebastian Zbik, but lost a 12-round unanimous decision to him in 2010.
Heiland’s three other losses have been to Nilson Julio Tapia by 10-round unanimous decision, Billi Facundo Godoy by 12-round unanimous decision and Mateo Damon Veron by 10-round majority decision. Heiland’s last loss was in 2013 and he’s now won eight fights in a row. He isn’t known as a big power puncher though as his current knockout ratio stands at 46 per cent. However, he’s stopped seven of his last eight opponents so Charlo shouldn’t underestimate him, especially the left hand.
Prediction…
Heiland likes to brawl, but will need to have a solid chin and be prepared to handle Charlo’s power shots and boxing skills. The winner of this fight is supposed to b the mandatory challenger for Gennady Golovkin’s WBC title if he beats Canelo Alvarez in September and it looks like that will be Charlo after a hard-fought and entertaining battle with Heiland on Saturday night.
The odds may be a bit skewed here as this should be competitive.
