Jeff Horn vs Gary Corcoran Preview December 13th

Unbeaten WBO Welterweight Champion Jeff Horn of Australia will be defending his title for the first time this Wednesday, December 13th when he takes on Gary Corcoran of England at the Convention and Exhibition Centre down under in Brisbane. The 12-round bout can be seen live in the USA on ESPN while fans in the UK can catch it on BoxNation and those in Canada can tune into TSN 2. Horn “won” the title in his last fight when he was gifted a unanimous decision over Manny Pacquiao while Corcoran’s last outing was a 12-round split decision over Larry Ekundayo for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Welterweight Crown.

My Pick

The 29-year-old Horn, who’s a former physical education teacher, will climb through the ropes with a near-perfect record of 17-0-1 with 11 Kos to his name. He’s a former Olympian who reached the quarterfinals of the Games in London, England five years ago as a junior welterweight. He turned pro the next year and has fought 106 rounds since then. Horn has also won a few inter-continental titles along the way before taking Pacquiao’s world title.

Horn’s has also beaten the likes of Ali Funeka, Randall Bailey, Ahmed El Mousaoui and Rico Mueller with his draw being a three-round technical affair with Rivan Cesaire in August of 2013. That fight was halted due to a cut suffered by Cesaire. Horn stands 5-feet-9-inches tall and has a 68-inch reach. He has decent power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 61 per cent. He’s not a finesse boxer as he relies on his aggression to win fights, and so far he’s been quite successful at it.

Corcoran, who had a pretty good amateur career, hails from London, England and is two years younger than the champ at 29. He has an impressive record of 17-1 with 7 Kos, but hasn’t really beaten anybody of note. When he did step up in class against Liam Williams in a challenge for the British super Welterweight Title in July of 2016 he was stopped in the 11th round. He turned pro back in 2011 and has 109 rounds under his belt. He doesn’t carry much in the way of power in his fists with a knockout ratio of just 39 per cent.

Unfortunately, Corcoran’s height and reach are unlisted. He’s fought 18 times and 11 of those bouts were against opponents with losing records. However, he’s also beaten three fighters who were unbeaten when they met in Ekundayo, Rick Skelton and Rick Godding. He also owns a win over Danny Butler. Corcoran’s definitely the underdog here, but as Horn proved in his win against Pacquiao, anything can happen if the fight should go the distance and is left in the hands of the judges.

Prediction…

Horn has proven to be quite a durable fighter, but I didn’t agree with his decision over Pacquiao. He definitely had his moments and looked impressive, but didn’t do enough to win the fight. But that being said, if he fights exactly the same way as he did back in July he should have no problem retaining his title against Corcoran on Wednesday.

Corcoran’s stepping up in class and has a tough task on hand.
