Jean Pascal vs Steve Bosse Preview July 20th
Former world champion Jean Pascal of Haiti returns to the ring this weekend as he takes on Steve Bosse of Quebec this Friday, July 20th in Laval, Quebec, where Pascal now calls home. The fight is scheduled for 10 rounds in the cruiserweight division and there’s no national TV for it. Pascal last fought in December when he stopped Ahmed Elbiali in the sixth round. Meanwhile, Bosse has just one pro boxing match to his name and that was a second-round KO over Julio Cuellar Cabrera in February.

My Pick
Pascal originally retired last year, but then decided against it. He’s now 35 years old and will be entering the ring with a record of 32-5-1 along with 19 Kos. He’s fought most of his career out of Montreal and is a two-time former champion at light heavyweight. Pascal has a 72-inch reach and stands 5-feet-11-inches tall. He’s strong and generally aggressive with a decent amount of power in his fists, but isn’t considered a knockout artist as his KO ratio currently stands at 49 per cent.
Pascal has a pretty good chin and speed to go along with his skills even though he was stopped twice by Sergey Kovalev. He’s been in the ring with some fine light heavyweights and super middleweights such as Kovalev, Adrian Diaconu, Carl Froch, Chad Dawson, Lucian Bute, Bernard Hopkins and Eleider Alvarez with his other three defeats coming to Froch, Hopkins and Alvarez by decisions. Pascal usually lets his hands go and pressures his opponents while displaying pretty good footwork.
His knockouts usually come after he’s worn his opponent down for several rounds, but he has enough power to drop anyone if he lands one square on the chin. Pascal has plenty of experience with 281 rounds under his belt since turning pro in 2005. This is really a no-win situation for Pascal though since he’s expected to be an opponent who has just one pro boxing match under his belt and he’ll be ridiculed if he happens to lose.
Bosse is 36 years old and hails from Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec. He’s basically known as a mixed martial arts fighter who has competed in the UFC. He was also known as an enforcer when playing semi-pro hockey for six seasons in Quebec and is now a firefighter. He’s 12-2 in MMA fights with 10 Kos and has also been stopped twice himself. He’s 5-feet-11-inches tall with a 74-inch reach, so has a minimal two-inch reach edge over Pascal while he’s the same height.
Prediction…
This could really be considered more of a novelty fight, but Pascal certainly has to be aware of Bosse’s power. There’s no doubt Bosse’s only chance is to land a knockout blow and Pascal will need to utilize his superior boxing skills and experience to make sure that doesn’t happen. I’m expecting Pascal to leave the ring a winner as long as he doesn’t get caught on the chin.
Bosse has a puncher’s chance.
