Srisaket Sor Rungvisai vs Iran Diaz Preview Oct. 6th
Srisaket Sor Rungvisai of Thailand will be defending his WBC Junior Bantamweight Title in his homeland this Saturday, Oct. 6th when he takes Iran Diaz of Mexico. Rungvisai, who’s also known as Wisasksil Wangek, was last in the ring in July when he stopped Young Gil Bae in the first round in a non-title fight. Diaz’s last ring appearance was a three-round technical draw with Adolfo Castillo in June. Rungvisai pulled off an upset in March, 2017 when he beat Roman Gonzalez by a controversial majority decision and then stopped him in their rematch in September by fourth-round stoppage.

My Pick
Since winning and defending the crown against Gonzalez, the 31-year-old Rungvisai also defended it against Juan Francisco Estrada by majority decision in February. He enters the contest at 46-4-1 with 41 Kos. His four losses have come against Carlos Cuadras by eighth-round technical decision in May of 2014, a 10-round unanimous decision to Kenji Oba in February of 2010, a third-round Ko to Yushin Yafuso in June, 2009 and a third-round TKO to Akira Yaegashi in March, 2009. Those two stoppages came in his first two pro fights and he drew his third outing over six rounds with Sean Patavikorngym.
Rungvisai has lost just once since 2009 and is currently enjoying a 19-fight winning streak with 15 of those outings coming by way of knockout. However, until meeting Gonzalez, Rungvisai had been taking on questionable opposition as his previous three opponents were making their pro debuts and the two before had limited and losing records. In fact, several of his last 19 opponents have had losing records and 14 of his 51 fights have been against boxers making their pro debuts.
Rungvisai turned pro in 2009 and he has 198 rounds under his belt since then. Other than beating Gonzalez, his biggest wins have been against Estrada, Yota Sato, and Jose Salgado. He’s a southpaw who stands 5-feet-3-inches tall with a reach of 63.5 inches. Rungvisai definitely has good power regardless of the opposition as his current knockout ratio stands at an impressive 80 per cent. His wins over Gonzalez and Estrada proved he’s a legitimate champion and he’s basically taking a bit of a break with this defence against Diaz.
As for Diaz, he’s a 28-year-old who is being helped out by Estrada and Juan Manuel Marquez too prepare for this fight. He’ll climb through the ropes with a mark of 14-2-3 along with with 6 Kos. He turned pro back in 2008 and has 90 rounds of experience under his belt. There’s no info available on his height and reach, but we do know that he isn’t the hardest hitter in the division as his current knockout ratio is just 32 per cent. Still, he’s managed to beat a couple of former world champions in Luis Concepcion and Hernan Marquez, both by 10-round unanimous decisions.
Diaz may have a questionable chin since he was knocked out in both of his losses. He was stopped in the third round by Juan Hernandez Navarrate in March of 2015 and by Nordine Oubaali in the seventh round in May of 2016. His other two draws came against Marcos Cardenas over four rounds in his pro debut and with with Jorge de Alba in another four round bout in September of 2011. Diaz definitely has some admirable skills, but he’ll need his chin to be in rock solid shape to stand up to the champion’s powerful fists.
Prediction…
Rungvisai suddenly became world famous after beating Gonzalez and he’s definitely one of the elite of his division. He’s getting paid well to fight at home against Diaz and took this fight rather than jumping into a rematch with Estrada. This is basically a tune-up for another big showdown, but he can’t afford to take Diaz lightly. Still, I’m expecting Rungvisai to retain his strap.
I’ll go with Rungvisai’s strength and experience.
