My Pick

The 33-year-old Trout fought Jermall Charlo for the IBF Jr. Middleweight title in May. 2016 and dropped a relatively close unanimous decision. He then looked good in October of 2017 in an exciting attempt to upset Jarrett Hurd in another shot at the IBF crown, but couldn’t come out for the 10th round. His also looked good against Jermell Charlo the last time out so the veteran has somewhat resurrected his career even though he fell short in those three title shots.

The southpaw needs a win badly here against Gausha though if he hopes to land another title shot or big-name opponent. He climbs into the ring on Saturday night with a record of 30-5 with 17 Kos. Trout’s other two career defeats came via consecutive unanimous decisions to Saul Alvarez and Erislandy Lara back in 2013. His best wins were unanimous decisions over Delvin Rodriguez and then Miguel Cotto at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2012.

He won the vacant WBA title in 2011 with a a unanimous decision over Rigoberto Alvarez and defended it against David Lopez, Frank LoPorto, Rodriguez and Cotto before losing it to Saul Alvarez Basically, Trout has lost to elite boxers and world champions only and has been stopped just twice. Trout had problems with Lara’s style, but usually looks good against skilled opponents. He’s an experienced boxer who’s fought 245 rounds since turning pro in 2005.

Trout has a somewhat frustrating counter-punching style and he isn’t known as much of a power puncher with a current knockout ratio of 47 per cent. His last knockout win came in September of 2015 and it’s his only stoppage in his last 12 fights dating back to November, 2011. Trout stands just over 5-feet-9-inches tall and has a reach of 72 inches. He has a relatively solid chin even though he’s been stopped and dropped a few times and usually wins his decisions due to his somewhat frustrating style.

The 31-year-old Gausha had a fine amateur career and represented the USA at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. He’ll climb through the ring ropes with a mark record of 21-1 with 10 Kos. He stands 5-feet-10-inches tall and has a reach of 72 inches, giving him an inch advantage in height over Trout. Gausha turned pro back in 2012 after the Olympics and has boxed 124 rounds since then. However, he’s been moved along at a slow to steady rate.

His lone loss came to Erislandy Lara by in October of 2017 and he hasn’t really faced anybody else of note than perhaps Charles Whittaker, Luis Grajeda and Eliezer Gonzalez. Gausha is also a former Golden Gloves and National Champion but was eliminated at the Olympics after two bouts. He doesn’t really have much one-punch power in his fists either and has a current knockout ratio of 45 per cent. Gausha has a pretty good chin and boxing skills and is taking a small step up in class here against Trout.

Prediction…

Trout has plenty of experience and an awkward style, but his best days seem to be behind him now. He did look rejuvenated against Hurd and the Charlo’s though and if he can fight to that level once again he should be able to do just enough to beat Gausha.

I think Trout has just enough left in the tank.

  1. Austin Trout is always exciting to watch and is one of the most underrated dangerous boxer’s in the game. People seem to think his best day’s are behind him. The people who think that have not seen his last fights. His losses came from Champions and they were close. I think Austin Trout knocks out Terrell and wins a few more belts to boot. Wait and see !!!!!!!!!!
