Jermall Charlo vs Brandon Adams Preview June 29th
Unbeaten interim WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo of Richmond, Texas will be meeting Brandon Adams of Lynwood, California at the NRG Arena in Houston, Texas this Saturday, June 29th. The 12-round bout can be seen live in the USA on Showtime while fans in Canada can catch it on TSN 3 and those in the UK can see it on ITV 4. Charlo last fought in December when he beat Matt Korobov by unanimous decision. Adams last saw action in November when he beat Shane Mosley Jr by 10-round unanimous decision.

Charlo is a former IBF Jr. Middleweight Champion who defended the belt three times after winning it by stopping Cornelius Bundrage in the third round in September, 2015. The 29-year-old ex-champion enters the contest with a perfect record of 28-0 along with 21 Kos. He stands 6-feet-tall and has a reach of 73.5 inches. Charlo’s on quite a roll as he’s stopped 19 of his last 22 opponents. He has 128 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2008 and this will be his fourth contest as a middleweight.
Charlo has very good power in his fists and his current knockout ratio now stands at 75 per cent. However, it could be argued that the only upper level boxers he’s met so far have been Julian Williams, Austin Trout and Bundrage, who was 42 when Charlo beat him for the title. Charlo hasn’t exactly been clashing with top-notch boxers but has been overpowering just about everybody he’s faced lately and it would be a bit of a stretch to consider Adams as an elite opponent.
Charlo has displayed fine speed and boxing skills but his chin has yet to be really tested. He’s a strong, offensive-minded boxer who would rather his fights didn’t reach the scorecards. His only other notable win so far has been against Antwone Smith. And although he’s beaten a world champion in Bundrage and former world champion in Trout, Charlo hasn’t proven to the fans to be an elite boxer as of yet and it’s doubtful a win over Adams will change that.
Adams is a 29-year-old who climbs into the ring with a mark of 21-2 with 13 Kos. He made his pro debut in 2011 and has boxed 100 rounds since. His losses came to Willie Monroe Jr by 10-round unanimous decision in 2014 and a second-round stoppage to John Thompson a year later. He had Thompson down in the first round and the fight was for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental, and the interim NABA Super Welterweight Titles. Meanwhile, the loss to Monroe was for the vacant NABA, and vacant WBO NABO middleweight Titles.
Adams may be best known to fans for his participation in the ESPN Boxcino tournament and the Contender series. His biggest career wins have been against Mosley Jr, Rafael Ortiz, Daniel Edouard, Alex Perez, Tyrone Brunson, Eric Walker and Ievgen Khytrov. Adams isn’t known as a big hitter and his current knockout ratio stands at 57 per cent. He’s not the biggest middleweight around either at just 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach, so he gives up three inches in height to Charlo and 3.5-inches in reach.
Prediction…
Adams is stepping up in class for the first time against Charlo but his lack of size and relative lack of power won’t do him any favours. I expect him to give a good account of himself with some good boxing skills but also expect him to fall short in his search of an upset.
Charlo’s a class above Adams.
