Jerwin Ancajas vs Miguel Gonzalez Preview Dec. 7th
Filipino IBF Jr. Bantamweight Champion Jerwin Ancajas defends his title for the eighth time this Saturday, December 7th when he takes on Miguel Gonzalez of Chile in Mexico. Ancajas was supposed to meet Jonathan Rodriguez in November but the fight fell through when Rodriguez couldn’t get a visa to fight in Carson, California. The 12-round bout can be seen in the USA on ESPN+. Ancajas last fought in May when he stopped Ryuichi Funai after six rounds while Gonzalez stopped Jimson Garcia in the eighth round in October for the WBA Fedelatin Super Flyweight Title.

Ancajas is a 27-year-old southpaw who enters the ring at 31-1-2 with 21 Kos. He won the title via a unanimous decision over McJoe Arroyo in September, 2016. He’s defended it against Jose Alfredo Rodriguez, Teiru Kinoshita, Jamie Conlan and Israel Gonzalez by stoppage as well as Jonas Sultan by unanimous decision and Alejandro Santiago Barrios via a split-decision draw and then Funai. The champ is 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 66.5-inch reach and has boxed 201 rounds since turning pro in 2009.
Before that, he enjoyed a fine amateur career by going 90-5. Since turning pro, Ancajas has also won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth Super Flyweight Title, Philippines Luzon Professional Boxing Association Bantamweight Title and the IBF Pan Pacific Super Flyweight Title. He’s a skilled all-round boxer who carries enough power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 61.2 per cent. He also has a solid chin and isn’t shy about letting his hands go.
Ancajas shouldn’t have a problem fighting in Mexico since he’s 10-0-1 with 8 Kos while boxing outside of his homeland. He’s not perfect as a pro though as he was beaten via a 10-round majority decision by Mark Anthony Geraldo in March of 2012 and was held to a four-round technical draw by Ervin Yamo in May, 2010. That fight had to be stopped due to a cut eye suffered by Ancajas which was caused by an accidental headbutt.
The 30-year-old Gonzalez hails from Santiago and has boxed 247 rounds since turning pro in 2010. He’s 31-2 with just 8 Kos and has a relatively low knockout ratio of only 24.3 per cent. He was stopped in the eighth round by Andrew Moloney in March with his first defeat being a 12-round unanimous decision to Paul Butler in 2013. He’s just over 5-feet-3-inches tall with a 64.5-inch reach which means he gives up 2.5-inches in height to Ancajas and two inches in reach.
Since turning pro Gonzalez has also won the Chilean Super Flyweight Championship and the WBC South American Super Flyweight Crown. His biggest wins have been against the likes of Pedro Cardenas, Luis Alberto Lazarte, Edgar Martinez, Carlos Ruiz, Anuar Salas, Sammy Reyes, Michell Banquez and Yader Cardoza. It’s safe to say Gonzalez is taking a huge step up in class on Saturday.
Prediction…
Ancajas is a fine boxer with good power but isn’t always as focused as he should be. He has a definite edge in experience and power against Gonzalez but still can’t afford to take him lightly. Gonzalez is relatively unknown on the world stage but could make a nuisance of himself for a few rounds. However, I’m still expecting Ancajas to retain his belt.
Ancajas is a class above Gonzalez.
