The IBF International Super Welterweight Title is on the line in Brentwood, England this Saturday, August 1st as champion Sam Eggington will be taking on fellow Englishman Ted Cheeseman. The 12-round fight can be seen live in North America on DAZN while those in the UK can see it on Sky Sports Action. Eggington last fought in November when he stopped Daniel Urbanski after two rounds. Cheeseman’s last action came in October when he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to Scott Fitzgerald for the British Super Welterweight Crown.

The 26-year-old Eggington lost his British and Commonwealth titles to Bradley Skeete by 12-round unanimous decision in March of 2016. but since then he’s captured the WBC International Welterweight, European Welterweight, and IBO Continental Super Welterweight Titles. He also owned the WBC International Silver Welterweight Title at one time. There’s more, as he also had a shot at the WBC Silver Super Welterweight Belt in March of 2019 but was stopped in five rounds by Liam Smith.
Eggington is now 28-6 with 17 Kos to his name. He stands 5-feet-11-inches tall but has an unlisted reach. Eggington has 181 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2012 and his knockout ratio currently stands at 50 per cent. As well as losing to Skeete and Smith, Eggington dropped a three-round unanimous decision to Johnny Coyle in 2014 and a unanimous three-round decision to Dale Evans the year before.
He was stopped in the second round by Hassan Mwakinyo in 2018 and dropped a 12-round split decision to Mohamed Mimoune in 2017. Eggington’s biggest wins have been over Denton Vassell, Frankie Gavin, Ceferino Rodriguez, Paulie Malignaggi and Shayne Singleton. Eggington’s basically a good domestic/European level boxer who’s struggled when stepping up in class. He likes to stay busy though as he fought six times in 2019. He’s also got a so-so chin as he’s been stopped twice.
As for Cheeseman, he’s 24 years old and enters the ring with a mark of 15-2-1. He’s boxed 115 rounds since turning pro in 2015 and like Eggington, has a current knockout ratio of 50 per cent. He had a pretty good amateur career with a record of 50-11. Cheeseman stands 5-feet-10-inches tall so gives up an inch in height to Eggington and his reach is also unlisted unfortunately. Cheeseman is winless in his last three outings after going undefeated in his first 15 pro bouts.
Cheeseman dropped a unanimous decision to Sergio Garcia in February, 2019 for the European Super Welterweight Title then drew Kieron Conway over 12 rounds to retain his British Super Welterweight Crown four months later. He then lost that title in October when he was beaten by Fitzgerald. Cheeseman has also been an English and WBA International Super Welterweight Champion in the past. His biggest wins have been against the likes of Lloyd Ellett, Matthew Ryan, Tony Dixon, Carson Jones and Paul Upton.
Prediction…
Eggington is a good boxer, but his chin is questionable even though he does have decent power. He’s got more experience than Cheeseman and has fought tougher opposition over the years. Cheeseman is also winless in his last three outings. This is a pretty good domestic matchup and it should be entertaining. I’m expecting Eggington to beat Cheeseman on Saturday night.
I’m going with the underdog Eggington.
