Brandon Figueroa vs Damien Vasquez Preview Sept. 26th
Undefeated WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Brandon Figueroa of Weslaco, Texas is scheduled to take on Damien Vasquez of Thornton, Colorado in Uncasville, Connecticut this Saturday, Sept. 26th. The bout can be seen on pay-per-view in America and the UK. Figueroa drew over 12 rounds with Julio Ceja in a slugfest in November in a fight Ceja missed weight for, allowing to Figueroa to become the full-fledged champ after holding the interim version. Vasquez last fought in February when he stopped Alejandro Moreno after the fifth round.

My Pick
The 23-year-old Figueroa captured the vacant interim WBA World Super Bantamweight Title when he stopped Yonfrez Parejo after eight rounds in April before stopping Javier Chacon in four rounds and then taking on Ceja in November. He climbs through the ropes with a near-perfect record of 20-0-1 with 15 Kos. Figueroa has boxed 106 rounds since turning pro in 2015 and is 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 72-inch reach. He has good power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 71.4 per cent and has also displayed a pretty solid chin up to now as well.
The biggest wins in his career have been against Chacon, Parejo, Moises Flores, Oscar Escandon, Victor Proa and Fatiou Fassinou. Brandon is the younger brother of boxer Omar Figueroa and an excellent young prospect. He stepped up in class for the first time against Flores and passed the test with flying colours. However, it could be argued that he hasn’t taken a step forward since with bouts against the limited Chacon and Ceja. Figueroa has the potential to be an exciting world champion but needs to face stiffer tests in the near future to prove he’s a legitimate champion.
Vasquez is a 23-year-old southpaw who resides in Las Vegas and carries around a record of 15-1-1 with 8 Kos. He’s boxed 85 rounds since making his pro debut in 2013. Vasquez stands 5-feet-5-inches tall but has an unlisted reach, so he gives up four inches in height to Figueroa. Since turning pro he’s captured the vacant NABF Junior Flyweight Title and the vacant WBC Youth Silver Super Flyweight Title.
His lone career loss came at the hands of Juan Carlos Payano by an eight-round unanimous decision in March, 2019 and he drew his very next fight over six rounds with Josue Morales five months later. Vasquez is moving up in class on Saturday as he hasn’t taken on any top contenders yet. His biggest wins have been against Lorenzo Trejo, Luis Golindano and Omar Soto. He has average power with a current knockout ratio of 47.1 per cent and has displayed a solid chin thus far.
Prediction…
When Vasquez previously stepped up in class with Juan Carlos Payano he fell short and instead of steadily gaining experience against tougher opponents his last foe, Moreno, had a record of 24-43-3. This leads me to believe Vasquez is biting off more than he can chew by taking on Figueroa at this stage. Figueroa’s last outing with Ceja was a punishing brawl and it may have taken something out of him. Still, I’m expecting him to defend his title successfully on Saturday die to his speed and punch output.
Figueroa’s a class above Vasquez at this stage.
