My Pick

The 30-year-old Roman won the WBA title by ninth-round stoppage over Shun Kubo in September, 2017 then defended it with unanimous decisions over Ryo Matsumoto and Moises Flores before stopping Gavin McDonnell in the 10th round in October of 2018. He then met TJ Doheny in April, 2019 to add the IBF title. Roman has a record of 26-3-1 with with 10 Kos and measures just over 5-feet-5-inches tall with a reach of 68 inches.

He turned pro back in 2010 and has 211 rounds of experience since then. He’s not known as a heavy hitter which is evident by his current knockout ratio of just 32.3 per cent. Roman’s other two losses came against Juan Reyes by eight-round unanimous decision in 2013 and to Takashi Okada by a four-round split decision in 2011. His draw was a four-round affair with Jensen Ramirez in his second pro fight in 2011.

Since turning pro after a 45-9 amateur career, Roman also won the vacant WBA-NABA Super Bantamweight Title in 2015 when be beat Daniel Noriega by a 10-round unanimous decision and then defended it four times. Roman’s biggest wins have been over Doheny, McDonnell, Flores, Matsumoto, Kubo, Erik Ruiz, Adam Lopez, Marlon Olea and Ramiro Robles. He hasn’t really taken on the cream of the crop when it comes to world class opposition but has handled his job well, entertained the fans and had a 19-fight winning streak going when he ran into Akhmadaliev.

The 36-year-old Payano is a solid pro and southpaw who may be best known for his first-round KO defeat at the hands of unbeaten WBA Bantamweight Champion Naoya ‘Monster’ Inoue of Japan in the World Boxing Super Series in 2018. Payano fights out of Miami, Florida and climbs into the ring with a record of 21-3 with 9 Kos. It may seem a bit odd that a 36 year old has just 24 pro bouts and 155 rounds under his belt, but he didn’t make his debut until 2010 when he was already 26 years old.

However, Payano enjoyed a fine and extensive amateur career and fought in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece and Beijing, China respectively. He met Yuriorkis Gamboa, Rey Vargas and McWilliams Arroyo as an amateur and lost to them, but also beat Arroyo and his brother McJoe Arroyo. Payano stands five-feet-five-inches with a 64.5-inch reach so is the same height as Roman but gives up 3.5-inches in reach.

Payano won several regional and minor titles before getting his first crack at a world title belt against Anselmo Moreno back in 2014 and won a sixth round technical decision and lifted the WBA Super World Bantamweight Title in the process. His first defence came against Rau’shee Warren by split decision, but was dropped in the last round. He also had a point deducted in the third round while Warren had two points taken away in the ninth.

They met in a rematch and Warren took the crown via a majority decision and that was the first loss on Payano’s pro record. Since then, Payano’s beaten the likes of Damien Vazquez, Isao Gonzalo Carranza, Alexis Santiago and Mike Plania. Payano has tons of experience and plenty of fine boxing skills, but he also lacks in power with nine stoppages in 24 fights for a knockout ratio of 37.5 per cent. He may be in the latter stages of his career now and six years older than Roman, but Roman can’t afford to underestimate him.

Prediction…

Payano has lost two of his last three fights and is now 36 years old. He’s still dangerous but I believe Roman has the energy level, determination and skills to have his hand raised in victory on Saturday night.

Roman’s youth and energy should lead him to victory.
