WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Patrick Teixeira of Brazil will be defending his title for the first time this Saturday, Feb. 13th when he takes on undefeated former WBA Jr. Middleweight Champion Brian Castano of Argentina. The 12-round bout takes place at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California and can be seen in most nations live on DAZN. Castano last fought in November, 2019 when he stopped Wale Omotoso after five rounds for the WBO Inter-Continental Jr. Middleweight Belt when Omotoso suffered a shoulder injury. The southpaw Teixeira won the interim title in his last fight when he edged Carles Adams by close unanimous decision (114-113, 114-113, 116-111) after dropping him in round seven.

The 30-year-old Teixeira climbs through the ropes with a fine mark of 31-1 with 22 Kos. He made his pro debut in 2009 and has 139 rounds to his name. He stands just under 6-feet-tall with a 76.5-inch reach. He’s got decent power with a current knockout ratio of 68.8 per cent and also owns plenty of skills in the ring.
His lone defeat came at the hands of Curtis Stevens in 2016 when he was stopped in the second round and that was basically the first time he took a step up in class opponent-wise. Teixeira won the vacant WBA Fedecentro Middleweight Title in 2012 when he stopped Samir Barbosa in the first round and then added the vacant WBC Youth Inter-Continental Super Welterweight Crown in 2012 when he stopped Omar Ramirez in the eighth round.
Teixeira captured the interim WBO Latino Super Welterweight Title in 2014 when he stopped Ignacio Fraga in 145 seconds. In 2018 he beat Davi Eliasquevici via a 10-round unanimous decision for the vacant WBO Latino Super Welterweight Crown. He’s also beaten the likes of Nathaniel Gallimore, Mario Lozano and Patrick Allotey.
Castano is 31 years old and won the interim WBA crown in November of 2016 when he stopped Emmanuel de Jesus in the sixth round of a slugfest in which both boxers were down. He then defended the belt against Michael Soro by split decision and Cedric Vitu by 12th-round stoppage. Castano then fought to a 12-round draw with former world champion Erislandy Lara in March, 2019.
He either relinquished the belt or had it stripped from him by the WBA, depending on the version you read, but he was no longer champion regardless. Castano owns a near- perfect record of 16-0-1 and has 12 Kos under his belt. He’s got good power in his hands with a current knockout ratio of 70.6 per cent. He’s basically the same height as the champion as he’s 6-foot-1 but his 67-inch reach means he has a big nine-inch disadvantage.
Castano turned pro back in 2012 and has boxed a total of 96 rounds since then. He’s fought the majority of his career in his homeland against numerous unrecognizable opponents, but this will be his sixth contest in the USA. Castano had a fine amateur career with several medals to his name as a welterweight and beat Errol Spence at the 2011 Pan America Games qualifying tournament. He also fought for Argentina in the World Series of Boxing and defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
Prediction…
The Brazil vs Argentina rivalry is legendary in soccer, and this should be an entertaining contest too since Castano and Teixeira are both fan-friendly boxers due to their power and boxing skills. Remember, Castano is a guy who outboxed Errol Spence as an amateur and he gave Erislandy Lara all he could handle. The champ has a significant nine-inch reach advantage though, so Castano needs to work his way inside. I’m leaning towards Castano here in a good tilt.
Castano’s a bit more powerful and that should be the difference, but it’s still a close call.
