My Pick
Rungvisai, who also known as Wisasksil Wangek, pulled off an upset in March, 2017 when he beat Roman Gonzalez by a controversial majority decision for the WBC Title. He then defended the crown against Chocolatito in their rematch in September, 2018 by fourth-round stoppage. The 34-year-old enters the contest with a fine mark of 49-5-1 with 42 Kos. His other losses have come against Carlos Cuadras by eighth-round technical decision in May, 2014, a 10-round unanimous decision to Kenji Oba in February, 2010, a third-round Ko to Yushin Yafuso in June, 2009 and a third-round TKO to Akira Yaegashi in March, 2009.
He then he lost his title to Juan Francisco Estrada by unanimous two stoppage losses came in his first two pro fights and he drew his third outing when he went six rounds with Sean Patavikorngym in August, 2009. Rungvisai has lost just twice since 2009 and had a 20-fight winning streak going with 15 knockouts until losing to Estrada. However, until meeting Gonzalez, Rungvisai had been taking on questionable opposition as three opponents of them were making their pro debuts and a couple of others had limited and losing records.
Rungvisai turned pro in 2009 and he has 234 rounds under his belt since then. Other than beating Gonzalez and Estrada, his biggest wins have been against Yota Sato, and Jose Salgado. He’s a southpaw who stands 5-feet-3-inches tall with a reach of 63.5 inches. Rungvisai definitely has good power regardless of the opposition as his current knockout ratio stands at an impressive 76.4 per cent. Since turning pro, Rungvisai has a mark of 6-2 with 3 Kos in world title fights and has gone 4-3 with 2 Kos against former, current or future world champions.
He’s captured the WBC Asian Boxing Council Super Flyweight Title and WBC Silver Super Flyweight Title along the way as well as the WBC World Super Flyweight Title twice and the Ring Magazine Super Flyweight Championship. His win and loss against Estrada were also for the lineal Super Flyweight Championship.
Sithmorseng is a 38-year old veteran who enters the fight with a mark of 50-7-1 with 27 Ko’s. He’s also 5-feet-3-inches tall and has a 65.5-inch wingspan which gives him a two-inch edge in reach on the former world champ. He made his pro debut back in 2005 and has 303 rounds of experience under his belt. He has average power in his fists with a current 46.6 per cent knockout ratio. He’s lost four of his last seven and five of his last 11 outings though.
Since turning pro, Sithmorseng has won the PABA Minimumweight Title from 2007 to 2010 and again from 2012 to 2013. He also held the WBA Minimumweight Title from Nov. 5, 2010 to Apr. 19, 2011 after Roman Gonzalez vacated it until he was stopped in the ninth round by Muhammad Rachman. Sithmorseng has fought exclusively in Asia as a pro and has taken on some pretty good opposition over the years.
His draw was a six-round affair in his pro debut and he’s been beaten by the likes of Rachman, Kazuto Ioka, Yutthana Kaensa, Ryoichi Taguchi, Masahiro Sakamoto, Wulan Tuolehazi and Jayson Mama. He was unbeaten from 2005 to 2011 until running into Rachman. All of his defeats have been by stoppage except the 2014 tilt against Kaensa as he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision. The bouts against Taguchi in 2014 and Ioka in 2014 were for the WBA Light Flyweight Title.
Prediction…
Both of these guys have tons of experience with Rungvisai having more power and definitely the better chin. He’s basically keeping busy here as he’s hoping to take in the winner of the Roman Gonzalez vs Juan Francisco Estrada title unification tilt this weekend. I like Rungvisai’s natural aggressiveness and expect him to have his hand raised in victory in what is basically a tuneup bout. However, he still needs to respect Sithmorseng’s skills.
Rungvisai was one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world not too long ago.
