Tyson Fury vs Martin Rogan Preview Apr. 14th
England’s Tyson Fury will take on Northern Ireland’s Martin Rogan in a 12-round heavyweight clash at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland on April 14th for the vacant Irish Heavyweight Title. Rogan’s biggest career wins have been over fellow Brits Matt Skelton (TKO 11), and Audley Harrison (10-round decision). Fury’s have been against Dereck Chisora (12-round unanimous decision), and Canadian Heavyweight Champion Neven Pajkic (TKO 3).
Both of these fighters seem to respect each other, at least out of the ring, which is quite the opposite of most British heavyweights such as Chisora and David Haye, who engaged in a press conference brawl recently in Germany. The undefeated Fury (17-0, 12 KOS) knows that Rogan (14-2, 7 KOS) will be coming after him with both hands and feels it’ll be a great fight because they both like to press the action.
Fury recently gave up his British and Commonwealth Heavyweight Titles as he didn’t want to take on David Price. He said he wanted to go on to bigger and better things, but strangely he’s taking a step backwards by fighting for the Irish belt. The reason Fury’s being allowed to fight for the Irish title is because of some ancient Irish ancestry in the family. Fury never defended his British title since winning it against Chisora and was given a hard time by Pajkic and Nicolai Firtha (TKO 5).
The 23-year-old Fury has a huge age advantage since Rogan is close to turning 42 years of age and hasn’t fought since November of 2010. The other huge advantage Fury possesses is his size. He stands 6-foot-nine inches tall and has an 85-inch reach while Rogan is pretty big himself at 6-foot-3, but gives up six inches in height.

Rogan’s best chance is to just go all out and let his fists fly since he’s somewhat limited as a skilled boxer. Fury says he’s in the best shape of his life and is ready for whatever Rogan dishes out. He’ll have to be because Fury has a habit of getting hit quite a bit in his bouts and if any heavyweight connects cleanly it could be lights out.
His manager Mick Hennessy said Fury wants to win the Irish title and then the European championship before trying to take a shot at a world champion. He’s got a good shot at beating Rogan for the Irish belt at least, and it’s mainly because of Rogan’s age and inactivity. Fury is somewhat overrated, but doesn’t mind engaging in slugfests and that’s what most of the fans want to see. There’s a good chance that’ll happen in this fight because it’s Rogan’s best chance to pull out a victory.
Prediction
Fury feels he was cheated back in 2008 because he wasn’t allowed to fight for Ireland in the Olympics because he couldn’t prove his ancestry and is hoping to make up for it by taking the Irish crown. He’ll probably achieve his goal against Rogan, but will endure some rocky moments along the way. Look for Rogan to tire and Fury to take the vacant belt by a stoppage.
