Anselmo Moreno vs David De La Mora Preview April 21st
Anselmo Moreno will be slugging it out with David De La Mora on Apr. 21 when the two get together for Moreno’s WBA Super Bantamweight title at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas. Moreno will enter the ring with a record of 32-1-1, with 11 KOS while De La Mora comes in at 24-1 with 17 KOs.
The 26-year-old Moreno of Panama has been on quite the tear lately with 26 straight wins. He hasn’t been beaten in the last nine years and looked very impressive when he beat former world champion Vic Darchinyan last year. He’s a pretty sharp and accurate puncher with a superb defence, but doesn’t really have much in the way of knockout power.
De La Mora’s only loss came to Koki Kameda last year in a close bout for the WBA Bantamweight Championship. He’s got pretty good offensive skills as well as excellent speed. However, his defence isn’t as good a Moreno’s and Kameda seemed to be hitting him at will in the later rounds of their bout last year. He’ll definitely be taking a step up in class when he enters the ring against Moreno.
Moreno’s a southpaw, very slick, and reminds many experts of former world champions Pernell Whitaker and Wilfredo Benitez due to his excellent ability to slip punches. He looked excellent last December when he beat Darchinyan. In fact he actually made it look easy as he jabbed, countered, and moved all night long on the way to a decision. It’s hard to imagine him losing to De La Mora, but it’s possible if he gets nailed cleanly by one of his opponent’s big shots.
However, the 23-year-old De La Mora has to be sure he isn’t too aggressive as he could leave himself open to one of Moreno’s counter shots. De La Mora is no slouch though and he should be able to give Moreno a decent fight. But Moreno’s accuracy and De La Mora’s lack of defence could mean it’ll be a long night for De La Mora. The longer the fight goes the more De La Mora will likely tire if he can’t protect himself from Moreno’s sharp counter punches.
Prediction
This isn’t a mismatch, but it might not be the most exciting bout of the year. If De La Mora can tag Moreno and make him aware of his power it could open things up. This is going to be hard to do though and unless Moreno has a very weak chin then it’s likely this fight is going to go the 12-round distance with Moreno walking out of the ring the same when he walked into it, as the world champion.
