Former IBF Jr. Bantamweight Champion Jerwin Ancajas of the Philippines will be attempting to win his belt back as he takes on unbeaten Fernando Daniel Martinez of Argentina in a rematch this Saturday, October 8th. The 12-round bout from Carson, California can be seen live in the USA on Showtime while those in Canada can catch it on TSN 4. Ancajas lost his title to Martinez by unanimous decision in a fight-of-the-year candidate in February while making his 10th defence.

Ancajas is a 30-year-old southpaw who enters the ring at 33-2-2 with 22 Kos. He originally won the IBF title via a unanimous decision over McJoe Arroyo in September, 2016. He then defended it against Miguel Gonzalez, Jose Alfredo Rodriguez, Teiru Kinoshita, Jamie Conlan, Ryuichi Funai and Israel Gonzalez by stoppage as well as Jonas Sultan and Jonathan Rodriguez by unanimous decision and Alejandro Santiago Barrios via a split-decision draw. The former champ is 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 66.5-inch reach and has boxed 231 rounds since turning pro in 2009.
Before that, he enjoyed a fine amateur career by reportedly going 90-5. Since turning pro, Ancajas has also won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth Super Flyweight Title, Philippines Luzon Professional Boxing Association Bantamweight Title and the IBF Pan Pacific Super Flyweight Title. He’s a skilled all-round boxer who carries enough power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 59.5 per cent. He also has a solid chin and isn’t shy about letting his hands go.
Ancajas’ is used to fighting on the road since he’s 11-1-1 with 8 Ko’s while boxing outside of his homeland. He’s not perfect though as he was also beaten via a 10-round majority decision by Mark Anthony Geraldo in March of 2012 and was held to a four-round technical draw by Ervin Yamo in May, 2010. That fight had to be stopped due to a cut eye suffered by Ancajas which was caused by an accidental headbutt.
Martinez is an energetic 31-year-old with a perfect record of 14-0 with 8 Kos. He made his pro debut in 2017 and has boxed 80 rounds since. He also has decent power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 57.2 per cent. Most of his opponents were basically relative unknowns until meeting Ancajas earlier this year and he pulled off an upset in his first fight in America. Martinez also had a good amateur career where he beat Andrew Moloney and fought in the World Series of Boxing.
Since turning pro, Martinez has captured the vacant Argentina FAB Super Flyweight Title and the WBC Silver Super Flyweight Title. He’s listed as just 5-feet-2-inches tall with a 64-inch reach. If that’s accurate, he gives up four inches in height to Ancajas as well as 2.5-inches in reach. Martinez has also beaten the likes of Angel Aquino, Abel Silva, Athenkosi Dumezweni, Carlos Ruiz and Nicolas Botelli.
Prediction…
Martinez landed a division-record 421 power punches in the first meeting as Ancajas was taken by surprise at the sheer volume of punches thrown at him. After the fight, Ancajas originally declared he was moving up in weight but then changed his mind and opted for the rematch. However, he may once again be too drained by trying to make the weight. Still, he’s a fine boxer with good power but isn’t always as focused as he should be. He has a definite edge in experience over Martinez but that didn’t help him the first time out. Martinez was an unknown who surprised Ancajas earlier this year, but now he knows what to expect, and I have a feeling Ancajas will be able to do just enough to regain his belt this weekend in another all-action affair.
Ancajas is motivated to regain his lost title.
