My Pick
Nery is a 27-year-old southpaw who has an impressive mark of 32-1 with 24 Ko’s and has boxed 159 rounds since making his pro debut in 2012. He stands 5-feet-5-inches tall with a 65-inch reach and possesses above-average power in his fists as he currently boasts a 72.7 per cent knockout ratio. However, he hasn’t scored a stoppage in his last three contests. Nery is fan-friendly boxer who throws punches in bunches and also owns a pretty solid chin.
Nery won the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight Title in September, 2020 via a unanimous decision over Aaron Alameda and then was stopped in his first defence by Figueroa for his lone loss. Since turning pro Nery has also captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas Bantamweight Title with a 10-round unanimous decision over Martin Casillas in 2016 and the vacant WBC Silver Bantamweight Title with a fourth-round stoppage over Raymond Tabugon in 2016 after being dropped in the first round.
He then stopped Shinsuke Yamanaka in the fourth round in 2017 to lift the WBC Bantamweight crown. Nery fought Yamanaka in a rematch in March, 2018 but came in overweight to lose the title. However, he still managed to win the fight by second-round stoppage He then won the vacant WBC Silver Bantamweight title again in October, 2018 with a third-round stoppage of Jason Canoy. He defended that belt with a ninth-round KO over Juan Carlos Payano in July, 2019 four months after stopping McJoe Arroyo after four rounds.
As for Jesus Ruiz Garcia, he’s 32 years old and carries around a mark of 43-9-5 with 31 Ko’s. He turned pro in 2006 and has 319 rounds of experience under his belt. He’s fought some decent boxers so far during his career with his stiffest test being an eighth-round stoppage at the hands of Leo Santa Cruz in a shot at the WBC Super Bantamweight Title in 2015. He was also stopped by Rodolfo Montoya in the eighth-round in 2009.
Garcia’s other losses have been against Paulino Villalobos, Christian Esquivel, Diego De La Hoya, Randy Caballero and Carlos Castro on points and he was disqualified in fights against Jesus Galicia in 2011 and Johnny Garcia in 2010. His draws have been against Ruben Tamayo, Cecilio Santos, Andres Gutierrez, Adriel Rios and Fernando Vargas Parra. As far as power goes, Garcia also has some pop with a current knockout ratio of 54.4 per cent and 31 stoppages in 43 wins.
He stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 67-inch reach which gives him a two-inch edge in both height and reach on Nery. Since turning pro he’s captured the Mexican Bantamweight Title, the interim WBC Latino Bantamweight Crown and the vacant WBC Fecombox Super Bantamweight Belt. His biggest wins have been against Luis Melendez, Gilberto Bolanos, Ruben Tamayo, Leonilo Miranda and Juan Jimenez.
Prediction…
Nery’s a strong boxer with plenty of power but will need to work his way inside. He took a lot of shots against Brandon Figueroa but bounced back reasonably well against Carlos Castro. Garcia is a solid pro who can’t be taken lightly but I’m expecting Nery to do enough to have his hand raised on Sunday.
Nery’s aggression should make the difference here.
