My Pick
Montana Love is a 27-year-old southpaw who will enter the ring with a near-perfect record of 18-0-1 with 9 Kos. The only blemish on it being an eight-round draw with Kenneth Sims Jr in July, 2018 for the vacant World Boxing Council Youth Silver Super Lightweight Title. Love made his pro debut back in April, 2015 and has boxed 93 rounds since.
Love enjoyed a fine amateur career and made it to the National Golden Gloves semifinals in 2012 where he was beaten by Jamontay Clark. He also lost to Rashidi Ellis as an amateur but beat Erickson Lubin. He stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a wingspan of 68.5-inches. He made a name for himself on the international scene in August, 2021 by stopping Ivan Baranchyk after seven rounds.
Love has also beaten Carlos Diaz, Wilfredo Acuna, Samuel Teah, Ricardo Garcia, Michael Ogundo, Jerrico Walton and Cameron Krael so he isn’t really taking a step up in class this weekend. Love isn’t really a power puncher as his current knockout ratio stands at 47.4 per cent but he definitely shouldn’t be taken too lightly in that department. Love is also a rapper and has dedicated himself to boxing since 2016 after serving a 16-month prison sentence for several charges including grand theft.
The 26-year-old Spark climbs through the ropes with a mark of 15-2 with 14 Ko’s and has fought 60 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015. he also had a pretty good amateur career and won the Australian National Championships Junior Final at 126 lbs in 2012. Since turning pro, Spark has captured the Queensland State, Australian, IBF Youth, IBF Australasian, and WBC Australasian Super Lightweight Belts.
His first loss came in his second pro fight when he was edged by Baishanbo Nasiyiwula by four-round majority decision. He then stepped up in class and weight in July of last year when he took om Tim Tszyu for the vacant Commonwealth and the WBO Global Super Welterweight Titles and was stopped in the third round. Spark has never fought in America so far and has beaten the likes of Jack Brubaker, James McDonald and Luis Leal.
Unfortunately there’s no information available on Spark’s height and reach so when can’t compare him size-wise to Love. However, we do know he carries plenty of power in his fists as his current knockout ratio stands at an impressive 82.4 per cent. The only man to go the distance with him in a victory was Brubaker, as spark beat him via an eight-round unanimous decision in April, 2021.
Prediction…
Love and Spark are both solid young pros with plenty of skills and Spark having the edge in power. However, he’s taken on limited opposition so far and was easily stopped when stepping up in class against Tim Tszyu. Montana needs to win this fight to in impressive fashion be considered a legitimate title challenger and he should pull it off.
A relatively close fight, but I like Love’s skills.
