My Pick
The 34-year-old Cuadras is 39-5-1 with 27 Ko’s to his name. He stands 5-feet-4-inches tall and has a reach of 66 inches. He turned pro back in 2008 and has 262 rounds under his belt since then. Cuadras is a fine power puncher with a current knockout ratio of 60 per cent, but he hasn’t recorded a stoppage since 2016 when he halted Richie Mepranum in the eighth round. He’s lost his last two fights and has gone the distance in eight of his past nine.
Before losing to Rodriguez, his losses came to Juan Francisco Estrada by 11th-round TKO in 2020 and unanimous decision in 2017 as well as to Roman Gonzalez by unanimous decision in September, 2016 while he was the WBC Super Flyweight Champion. He was also beaten by McWilliams Arroyo by 10-round majority decision five months after losing to Estrada in 2017. Cuadras won the title in May, 2014 by technical decision over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and defended it six times until losing to Gonzalez. Cuadras’ lone draw was a four-round technical affair with Jose Salgado in September 2014.
Cuadras has taken on some tough opponents over the years with his best wins coming against Rungvisai, David Carmona, Mepranum, Dixon Flores, Salgado, Ricardo Nunez, Luis Concepcion and Koki Eto. He’s been stopped once and on the canvas in the past but still has a strong chin. Cuadras possesses good speed, experience, power and boxing skills and is a handful for anybody when he’s at his best.
Since turning pro, Cuadras has also won the WBC Continental Americas Super Flyweight, and Bantamweight Titles, the WBC Silver Super Flyweight Belt and the interim WBC Latino Bantamweight Crown. His five career losses have come in his last nine fights and it’s hard to say how much the wars have taken out of him over the past few years.
Macias is 28 years old and enters the fight with a perfect mark of 16-7-1 with 12 KO’s and has boxed 107 rounds since making his pro debut in 2017. There’s no height and reach information for him so we don’t know how measures up against Cuadras size-wise but he has pretty good power with 12 of his 16 wins coming by stoppage and a current knockout ratio of 50 per cent.
His lone draw came over four rounds against Santiago Alarcon in 2017 while he’s been beaten by Angel Serrano, Ruben Vega, Christ Esabe, Luis Pacheco, Bryan Acosta, Carlos Lopez and Victor Bernabe. Lopez, Bernabe and Vega stopped him while his other defeats were all by points. His defeat to Serrano in 2021 was for the vacant NABF Junior Super Flyweight Title and his 2021 defeat to Esabe was for the vacant WBC Francophone Featherweight Belt.
After going unbeaten in his first 15 pro outings, Macias’ career has derailed recently as he’s lost five fights in a row and six of his last seven with the last two coming by stoppage. All of those fights came in the last two years as he fought five times in 2022 and six times in 2021. He’s basically a journeyman boxer but still carries enough power to do some damage.
Prediction…
Cuadras will have a year’s worth of ring rust to get through but he’s in against an opponent who’s lost five straight fights with the past two coming by KO. Cuadras is back in the ring to get some work in and to rebuild his confidence after two straight losses in world title fights. However, it’s probably safe to say his career as an elite boxer will be over if he loses this weekend. Macias has a puncher’s chance but it’s a slim one. I’m going with Cuadras in what seems to be a bit of a mismatch on paper anyway. Remember, he’s been involved in several classic battles and could have a lot taken out of him by now at the age of 34.
Cuadras’s experience and toughness could be the difference.
