My Pick
The 29-year-old Gonzalez owns a record of 25-3 with 15 Ko’s and now fights out of Los Angeles. He stands 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 70-inch reach and has boxed 160 rounds since making his pro debut back in 2012. He possesses slightly better-than-average power with a current knockout ratio of 53.4 per cent but has gone the distance in four of his last five fights. Since turning pro he’s also captured the WBO NABO Featherweight Belt and as an amateur he won silver at the silver at the 2011 National championships and gold the following year.
Gonzalez’s biggest wins have been against Miguel Marriaga, Rafael Rivera, Rodrigo Guerrero, Derrick Murray and Jose Miguel Tamayo. His first defeat came at the hands of Shakur Stevenson via unanimous decision in a shot at the vacant WBO Featherweight Title in October, 2019. His second defeat was also in a WBO World Featherweight Title shot when he dropped a unanimous decision to Emanuel Navarrete in October, 2021.
Gonzalez possesses a fine jab and combines it with good footwork while keeping his guard high for defence. He had a fine amateur career which saw him beat and lose to Gervonta Davis and also competed in the World Series of Boxing. He performed well against Stevenson, Navarrete and Dogboe, but fell short of pulling of an upset in each fight. However, he did gain some valuable experience against world-class opposition.
The 28-year-old Vivas fights out of California and will climb into the ring with a mark of 22-2 with 11 Ko’s. He has 127 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2014. Vivas stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 66.5-inch reach which gives him an inch edge in height on Gonzalez but a 3.5-inch reach disadvantage.
Vivas is slightly below average when it comes to power as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 45.8 per cent and has gone the distance in his last three fights and in four of his last five outings. His first loss came at the hands of Ruben Villa by way of a wide 10-round unanimous decision in a shot at the WBO International Featherweight Title in 2019 and he dropped a 10-round majority decision to Eduardo Baez last March.
Prediction…
Gonzalez has lost three of his last five fights and is facing a capable boxer in Vivas. Gonzalez has the edge in power and experience though and should be able to combine those attributes with his boxing skills to pull out a win here as a loss or draw would certainly damage his career.
I’m giving the edge to Gonzalez due to his power and experience.
