Adrien Broner vs Bill Hutchinson Preview June 9th, 2023
After another two-year layoff, Adrien Broner of Cincinnati, Ohio returns to the ring in Miami, Florida this Friday, June 9th with Don King as his new promoter. The matchup leaves a lot to be desired though as he’s taking on journeyman Bill Hutchinson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in a 10-round welterweight tilt, which will be shown live on pay per view and FITE tv in the UK. Broner’s last outing resulted in a controversial 12-round unanimous decision win over Jovanie Santiago in February, 2021 while Hutchinson last boxed in January, 2022 when he beat Rondale Hubbert by a six-round unanimous decision.

The 33-year-old Broner is a former four-division world champion at junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight and welterweight and will climb through the ropes with a record of 34-4-1 with 24 Ko’s. Broner suffered his four defeats at the hands of Manny Pacquiao in 2019, Mikey Garcia in 2017, Shawn Porter in 2015 and Marcos Maidana back in 2013 as they all beat him by 12-round unanimous decisions in the welterweight division.
He also fought to a 12-round draw with Jessie Vargas in April, 2018 which means he has won just one of his last four outings. Broner possesses enough talent to be an elite boxer, but his maturity level, attitude and work habits could all do with a lot of improvement as well as his behaviour outside of the ring. He keeps promising fans he’s changed, but they’ll have to wait until Saturday night to judge for themselves.
Broner stands 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 69-inch reach and possesses excellent speed and good power as well as plenty of pro experience. He’s fought 247 rounds since turning pro in 2008 after a fine amateur career which saw him win the 2003 National Silver Gloves final in the 12/13-year-old division and reach the quarterfinals of the 2004 USA Junior Olympic National Championship, and he has a current knockout ratio of 60.5 per cent. However, he hasn’t stopped anybody in the ring since 2016.
Broner’s beaten some good opponents over the years such as Daniel Ponce De Leon, Adrian Granados, Jason Litzau, Eloy Perez, Vicente Escobedo, Antonio DeMarco, Gavin Rees, Paulie Malignaggi, Ashley Theoplane, Carlos Molina, John Molina Jr., Emmanuel Taylor and Khabib Allakhverdiev. But when stepping up in class against Maidana, Porter, Garcia, Vargas and Pacquiao, he’s fallen short of the mark.
Hutchinson is 34 years old and makes his ring walk with a mark of 20-2-4 under his belt along with 9 Ko’s. He’s boxed 125 rounds since making his pro debut in 2011 ans stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with an unlisted reach, which means he has a two-inch height advantage on Broner. Hutchinson definitely isn’t known as a powerful puncher as his knockout ratio currently sits at 34.6 per cent.
He’s fought limited opposition as a pro and will definitely be taking a step up in class against Broner this weekend. Hutchinson’s defeats have come at the hands of Omar Doumbia in his pro debut and Amonte Eberhardt in 2016, both by decision. He also has draws against Agustin Cicero, Curtis Niko Morton, Greg Coverson Jr and Larry Ventus with the first two being over four rounds and the last pair being six-round affairs.
Prediction…
Broner is finally back in the ring after previous scheduled fights fell apart and the difference here could come down to work ethic and heart, which is often where Broner lets himself and his fans down. He’s taking on a veteran journeyman with a decent record who’s a bit bigger than him. Hutchinson is a durable boxer with a good chin but lacks power. He hasn’t lost since 2016 as he’s riding a 10-fight winning streak, albeit against limited opposition. Hutchinson has a chance to make a name for himself, as do all of Broner’s opponents. Both guys will have some ring rust to get through and you should expect the unexpected when Broner gets in the ring. That being said, I’m expecting Broner to win, but expectations don’t really mean much when he fights.
Broner’s experience and power should be the difference.
