My Pick
The 34-year-old Conceicao is best known for his defeat to Shakur Stevenson, his controversial unanimous-decision loss to Oscar Valdez in September, 2021 in a shot at the WBC Super Featherweight Crown and for winning a gold medal at the 2018 Olympics in his homeland of Brazil as a lightweight. He also competed at the 2012 Olympics in London, England where he was beaten by Josh Taylor in his first contest and fought at the 2008 games in Beijing, China where he was also beaten in his first fight.
In addition, Conceicao competed in several World Amateur Championships and dropped a close decision to Vasyl Lomachenko in 2011. He’s built a record of 17-2 as a pro since with 8 Kos for a 42.1 per cent knockout ratio and has gone the distance in four of his last five fights. He stands just over 5-feet-10 inches tall with a 70-inch reach and has boxed 115 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016. .
Conceicao’s only fights against top-notch competition as a pro were against Stevenson and Valdez and he fell short but arguably should have earned the decision against Valdez despite being docked a point in the ninth round for hitting the champion behind the head. The Brazilian’s biggest wins so far have been against the likes of Xavier Martinez, Luis Coria, Carlos Ruiz, Edgar Cantu, Joey Laviolette and Eduardo Pereira Dos Reis. He has a decent chin but was dropped in the second round by Coria in 2020 and was deducted two points for low blows.
The 33-year-old Polanco carries a record of 20-4-1 with 11 Ko’s and has gone 122 rounds since turning pro in 2012. He measures 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 71-inch reach which gives him an inch edge in reach over Conceicao even though he’s 4.5-inches shorter. Like Conceicao, Polanco also possesses average power with a current knockout ratio of 44 per cent. He’s gone the distance in seven of his last eight fights and has lost three in a row to go with a win and draw in his past five outings.
Polanco’s defeats came to Javier Fortuna by 10-round unanimous decision in 2017; to Jaime Arboleda by 10-round majority decision in January, 2022; by 10-round unanimous decision to Albert Bell in a shot at the vacant WBO NABO Super Featherweight title last September and to Oscar Guerrero in his last outing in January. His lone draw was an eight-round affair with Marco Acevedo in 2021. Polanco captured the vacant WBA Fedelatin Title in 2015 when he stopped Elvin De la Rosa after five rounds. De la Rosa came in overweight and the title was on the line for Polanco only.
Prediction…
Conceicao is a somewhat aggressive boxer with a good chin and skills while Polanco has struggled against upper-level opponents. Polanco does have a good chin though but his career has come off the rails recently as he’s won just once in his past four outings. I’m expecting Polanco to give it a good go but to come put on the wrong end once again.
