Sam Goodman vs R’aeese Aleem Preview June 17th, 2023
Sam Goodman of Australia will be taking on R’aeese Aleem of Muskegon, Michigan his Saturday, June 17th in a 12-round super bantamweight tilt between the two unbeaten boxers. The fight comes from Australia and can be seen live in America on Showtime on the undercard of the Tim Tszyu vs Carlos Ocampo bout. Goodman last saw action in March when he beat TJ Doheny by a 12-round unanimous decision to defend his WBO Oriental and IBF Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight Titles. Aleem last boxed in September when he beat Mike Plania via a 10-round unanimous decision after dropping him in the second round to defend his WBO NABO Super Bantamweight Crown.

Goodman is just 24 years old and climbs through the ropes with a perfect mark of 14-0 with 7 Ko’s. He’s boxed 85 rounds since turning pro in 2018 following an amateur career which saw him reach the semifinals of the 2017 Australian National Championships and 2013 and 2014 Junior Championships. He won the 2017 Oceanian Championships and also fought at the 2016 AIBA Youth World Championships and won the Australian Youth and Junior National Championship in 2016.
As far as power goes, Goodman is just about average with a current knockout ratio of 50 per cent and has gone the distance in three of his last four outings. He stands just over 5-feet-6-inches tall with an unlisted reach. Since turning pro Goodman has also captured the vacant Australasian Featherweight Title. He took a step up in class the last time out against former world champion TJ Doheny and passed the test without a problem. He also has wins over Richie Mepranum and Juan Miguel Elorde.
As for Aleem, he’s 32 years of age and has 102 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2011. Before that he enjoyed a fine amateur career which saw him reach the 2007 and 2011 National Golden Gloves quarterfinals as well as the 2009 and 2010 semifinals. Aleem climbs through the ropes with a perfect mark of 20-0 with 12 Ko’s. He stands 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 68.5-inch reach, which sees him give up just half=an-inch in height to Goodman.
As far as power goes, A’leem has decent pop in his punches with a current knockout ratio of 60 per cent. but has gone the distance in his past two fights after stopping his seven previous opponents. He won the WBA interim Super Bantamweight Title in January, 2021 when he stopped Vic Pasillas in the 11th round. He captured the vacant WBO NABO Super Bantamweight Belt 10 months later with a 10-round majority decision over Eduardo Baez and also has wins over Derrick Wilson, Adam Lopez and Marcus Bates.
PREDICTION…
Goodman is just 24 years old while Aleem is 32, but Aleem has the edge in both boxing skills and power. It’s going to be hard to win on points in Australia though, so Aleem really needs to turn up the heat here. I think if he lets his hands go and works hard enough he should do just enough to earn a close victory.
This could be a test which Goodman falls short on.
