My Pick
Garcia is 30 years old boasts a fine record of 34-2 with 14 Kos. His most memorable bouts came against Sebastian Fundora in December, 2021 and Tony Harrison in his next outing in April, 2022 for the vacant WBC Silver Super Welterweight Title, but he lost both of them by unanimous decision. The highly-entertaining 12-round fight with Fundora saw Garcia go right at it from the opening bell. He landed numerous clean shots but his relative lack of power cost him. He’s stopped just one of his last 11 opponents and has a current knockout ratio of 38.9 per cent.
Garcia measures just under 6-feet-tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach. He made his pro debut back in 2012 and has boxed 260 rounds since. As a pro, he’s won the WBC Mundo Hispano, Spanish, WBC International, WBC Silver, and EBU European Super Welterweight titles and was named the ESPABOX Spanish fighter of the year in 2019 and 2020. His best wins have been over Isaac Real, Maxime Beaussire, Ted Cheeseman, Sergey Rabchenko and Pablo Mendoza.
Tellez is just 23 years old and fights out of Stafford, Texas. He has just 16 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2020 due to his perfect mark of 5-0 with 4 Ko’s. He’s gone the distance just once, and that was just six rounds against Cameron Krael in his last outing. While there’s no doubt he has good power, with a current knockout ratio of 80 per cent, the combined record of his five opponents was 24-62-8 so he’s definitely taking a step up in class against Garcia.
At 5-feet-10-inches tall, Tellez gives up 1.5-inches in height to Garcia and he also has an unlisted reach. Tellez enjoyed a fine amateur career as he made it to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Cuban National Championships and started his pro career with a couple of fights in Russia. The Garcia vs Tellez bout will open the pay-per-view card on Saturday night.
Prediction…
Garcia just snapped a two-fight losing streak with a win in his last bout in April and he has a wealth more pro experience than Tellez. Power can be the great equalizer in boxing though and that’s where the young Cuban has the advantage. Garcia has a solid chin so this is going to be a tough test for Tellez. I’m looking for Garcia to do just enough to add another win to his record or his hopes of landing a title shot will be gone.
Garcia’s experience and chin should get the job done, likely going the distance.
