My Pick
The 32-year-old Arthur enters the ring with an impressive mark of 22-1 with 15 Ko’s and has boxed 105 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 following his amateur career. Since then he captured the vacant British Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Title in October, 2019 via a 12-round unanimous decision over Emmanuel Amin. He defended it against Doc Spelman by unanimous decision before beating Anthony Yarde by 12-round split decision in December, 2020 to add the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Crown.
He defended the IBO belt with a ninth-round TKO over Davide Faraci but then lost both of his titles when he was halted by Yarde in the fourth round of their 2021 rematch. Arthur bounced back from his lone pro defeat with TKO wins over Walter Sequiria (5th rd) and Joel McIntyre (2nd rd) before beating Crighton on points over 10 rounds in his latest outing in March. Twelve of Arthur’s first 14 opponents all had losing records before stepping up in class.
Still, Yarde is basically his only well-known opponent and he used his boxing skills to upset him in a close split decision in their first meeting. As far as power is concerned, Arthur is above average as 68.2 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage but is 3-1 in his last four outings with two stoppage wins. He has a decent chin even though Yarde stopped him and he stands 6-feet-2-inches with a 74-inch reach. Arthur enters the bout ranked number nine at light heavyweight by the WBA, four by the WBO and number 11 by the IBF.
As for the hard-hitting Suarez, the 31-year old a record of 18-1 with 17 Ko’s and has banked just 56 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 following an amateur career which saw him compete in the World Series of Boxing. At 6-feet tall he gives up two inches in height to Arthur and also gives up two inches in reach with his 72-inch wingspan. He has a ton of power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 94.4 per cent. The only time he won a fight on points was back in December, 2018 when be beat Hugo David Quiroz over 10 rounds via a unanimous decision.
The lone defeat for Suarez came at the hands of Alberto Ramiez when he was caught cold in the first round and stopped in just 151 seconds. Suarez has never fought as a pro outside of his homeland of Argentina and has basically faced local opposition. He won the vacant WBA Fedebol Light Heavyweight Title in 2019 when he halted Gerard Mellado in the first round and added the Argentine Title in 2020 with a first-round stoppage of Walter Sequeira.
Suarez moved up to cruiserweight in December, 2020 and won the vacant WBA Fedebol Crown when he beat Cesar Hernan Reynoso by ninth-round TKO. He came back down to the 175 lb light heavyweight division and added the vacant WBO Latino Title to his collection when he stopped Juan Boada in the third round.
Prediction…
This is going to be a very interest fight and a tough one for Arthur as the rugged Suarez definitely has the power to pull off a win on his first road trip. Arthur might want to stay away from a firefight but somewhere along the line his chin’s going to be tested. Arthur may have the better boxing skills and he’s fighting at home where visitors to the UK often get shafted, but this fight’s going to come down to his ability to take a punch. This is a tossup to me but with the fight being held in the UK and with both boxers having power and both having been stopped in the past, I’ll give Arthur a very slight edge.
A close call but I’ll go with Arthur.
