Conor Benn vs Peter Dobson Preview February 3rd, 2024
Unbeaten Englishman Conor Benn, who failed a couple of drug tests in his homeland last year, is back in the ring for just the second time 22 months when he takes on undefeated Peter Dobson of the Bronx, New York this Saturday, February 3rd. The 10-round junior middleweight bout will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada as Benn isn’t licensed to fight in the UK. The fight can be seen live in most nations on DAZN in prime time UK time. This is Benn’s second fight at 154 lbs since moving up from welterweight. He last saw action in September when beat Rofolfo Orozco via a 10-round unanimous decision. Dobson last boxed in June, 2022 when he beat Rodrigo Damian Coria by an eight-round unanimous decision.

The 27-year-old Benn of Ilford, Essex is the son of former British great and world champion Nigel Benn. He fought as an amateur in Australia with 20 wins in 22 contests before turning pro in 2016. Since then he’s boxed 94 rounds and has compiled a perfect record of 22-0 with 14 Kos. He has pretty good power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 63.6 per cent and has stopped three of his past six opponents. Benn stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 68-inch reach.
Benn has a decent chin but has been on the deck as a pro when Cedrick Peynaud dropped him twice in the first round in 2017. However, he picked himself up and returned the favour in the fifth and sixth rounds to earn a six-round decision. The two met again a year later with Benn taking a 10 round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBA Continental Welterweight Title.
He’s defended it six times as he stopped Jussi Koivula and Steve Jamoye, beat Sebastian Formella by decision and then stopped Samuel Vargas in just 80 seconds in April, 2021and took a 10-round unanimous decision over Adrian Granados five months later before stopping Chris Algieri in four and Chris Van Heerden in two. Benn has been brought along relatively slowly as he hasn’t faced a current legitimate contender as of yet so is taking a sideways or backwards step this weekend as he returns to the ring to work out the kinks.
Dobson is 33 years old and has compiled a perfect mark of 16-0 with 9 Ko’s and has boxed just 77 rounds since turning pro in 2014 after his amateur career. He also competed in the TCL Team combat League Organization in 2023 but wasn’t too successful there as he went 3-7 in the one-round contests. Dobson measures 5-feet-10-inches tall with an unlisted reach which gives him a tw-inch height advantage over Benn.
As far as power is concerned, Dobson is just above average as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 56.3 per cent and like Benn, he’s gone the distance in three of his past six outings. As a pro, he captured the vacant WBC USA Silver Welterweight Title min 2017 with an eight-round majority decision over Jeremy Nichols. He also has wins over Salim Larbi, Emmanuel Medina, Andres Viera, Jose Borrego and Wilfrido Buelvas.
Prediction…
Benn is six years younger than Dobson and is naturally aggressive but needs to respect Dobson’s skills and power or he could be in for a bit of a surprise, such as he was in his last fight against Orozco. I think if Benn is as explosive and aggressive as he usually is though he should pull it off but will have to work hard for the win. He also needs to make sure he doesn’t get too carried away hunting for a KO in his first appearance in Las Vegas.
Benn’s aggressiveness should pull him through.
