Charlie Edwards vs Georges Ory Preview April 12th, 2024
Former WBC Flyweight Champion Charlie Edwards of England is back in the ring this Friday, April 12th when he takes on Georges Orly of France in London, England. The 10-rounder is for the vacant WBC International Silver Bantamweight Title and can be seen live in the UK on Channel 5. Edwards beat Cristofer Rosales by unanimous decision back in 2018 to win his world title. He defended it by unanimous decision against Angel Moreno but was then stopped in the third round by Julio Cesar Martinez in the third round. The decision was then changed to a no-contest when it was ruled that Martinez hit Edwards while he was down. Edwards has fought just three times since that August, 2019 bout and beat Darwing Martinez on points over six rounds in his last outing last June. Ory last saw action in October when he beat Pablo Ariel Gomez by 10-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBC Francophone Bantamweight Belt.

My Pick
The 31-year-old Edwards hails from Sutton, Surrey and enters the ring with an impressive 18-1 mark with 7 Ko’s. He’s fought 133 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015 and has little power as just 38.9 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and just one of his last six bouts. Edwards does make up for it though in skills, heart and hustle though. Before turning pro he enjoyed a fine amateur career and won a bronze medal at the European Championships in 2011 in Ankara, Turkey.
Since turning pro he’s also captured the English and WBC International Silver Flyweight Titles as well as the British and WBA Continental Super Flyweight Crowns. Edwards stands 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 66-inch reach. His lone loss as a pro came at the hands of John Riel Casimero in September, 2016 when he was stopped in the 10th round in a shot at the IBF World Flyweight Title. Edwards hasn’t exactly faced the cream of the crop in his division in the rest of his fights as his best wins have been against the likes of Rosales, Moreno, Anthony Nelson, Iain Butcher, Luke Wilton and Louis Norman.
As for Ory, he’s a 32-year-old southpaw who climbs through the ropes with a mark of 17-3-1 with just 2 Ko’s. With just 11.8 per cent of his wins coming by stoppage, Edwards looks like a power puncher to compared to Ory. The native of France has fought 157 rounds since making his pro debut in 2013 following an amateur career which saw him reach semifinals of the 2010 and 2013 French National Championships and the quarterfinals of the 2012 EUBC European Under-23 Championships.
He also made it to the Final of the 2010 French Cup. Unfortunately there’s no reach listed for Ory but he measures 5-feet-5-inches tall which means he gives up an inch in height to Edwards. As a pro, Ory fought to a four-round draw with Daniel Martins in his debut in 2013 and dropped an eight-round unanimous decision in 2015 to Jeremy Beccu. The following year he lost a six-round decision to Geoffrey Do Santos and was stopped after nine rounds by Karim Guerfi due to a cut eye to lose his European Bantamweight Title.
Ory had won the vacant belt in March, 2018 with a 12-round unanimous decision over Razmik Grigoryan. He also won the vacant IBO International Super Flyweight Crown in 2021 with a 10-round unanimous nod over Juan Hinostroza. He followed up the next year with a 12-round unanimous decision over Rosendo Hugo Guarneros for the vacant IBO Super Flyweight Title. This will be just the second time Ory has fought outside of France.
Prediction…
Edwards is a bit underrated and this should be a good test for him as Ory is durable and has a good chin even though he lacks power. Edwards hasn’t been very active as this is just his fourth fight since August, 2019 as he stepped away from the sport for awhile. He’s a sharp boxer though and fighting at home, so unless Ory dominates him I can see Edwards having his hand raised in victory here. The odds should be closer though and it’s likely to go the distance.
Edwards gets the nod at home in England.
