Here are the betting odds from online sportsbook BetOnline.ag (full review here).

  • Gabriel Maestre +700
  • Eimantas Stanionis -1250

My Pick

Stanionis is 29 years old and similar to Maestre in style as he’s quite aggressive with better-than-average power in his punches. He has a perfect record as he enters the contest at 14-0 with 9 Ko’s He made his pro debut in 2017 and has boxed 86 rounds since with a current knockout ratio of 64.3 per cent but has gone three fights without halting an opponent. Stanionis stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a wingspan of 68 inches.

He enjoyed a fine amateur career as he boxed at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where he went 1-1. Stanionis has fought his entire pro career in America with his best wins coming over Butaev in his last outing and Thomas Dulorme by 12-round unanimous decision in 2021. Stanionis also fought fought Luis Collazo in 2021 with the bout being called a no-contest in the fourth round after Collazo suffered an accidental head butt.

The 37-year-old Maestre also owns an unbeaten record as he’ll climb into the ring with a mark of 6-0-1 with 5 Ko’s. He obviously has tremendous power as his current knockout ratio sits at 83.3 per cent. The only two men who have lasted the distance with him were Mykal Fox in a 12-round decision in 2021 and Taras Shelestyuk in a 10-round draw in his nest outing in 2022. Maestre has boxed just just 34 rounds since turning pro in 2019 following his long and successful amateur career. In fact, he lost to Stanionis in points in 2015 as an amateur.

Also, in the amateur ranks, Maestre boxed at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships as well as a bronze at the 2019 Pan American Games; a gold at the 2015 Pan American Games; gold at the 2018 and 2018 South American Games. He also competed in the World Series of Boxing. Maestre measures just over 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 73-inch reach to give him a 2.5-inch advantage in height over Stanionis as well as five inches in reach.

Maestre won the vacant WBA Fedebol super Welterweight title in his pro debut by stopping Jeovanis Barraza in the second round. He captured the Interim WBA World Welterweight Belt with his 12-round unanimous decision over Mykal Fox in 2021 and has also beaten Daniel Vega, Diego Gabriel Chaves and former world champion Devon Alexander.

Prediction…

Stanionis surprised me with his win over Butaev to capture the title in his last outing, but that was over two years ago. He’s likely going to have some ring rust to get through and that could be dangerous if a power puncher like Maestre decides to jump on him at the opening bell. Stanionis beat him in the amateurs though, has a good chin and is also eight years younger than his opponent. Both have a lot of power, solid chins and plenty of amateur experience but I think as long as Stanionis’ can handle Maestre’s power he will retain his belt Saturday night in a close, action-packed fight. Maestre is a decent underdog though at +700.

A close fight, but Stanionis is eight years younger with a good chin.
