My Pick
The 33-year-old Moloney enters the ring with a mark of 26-3 with 16 Ko’s and has boxed 196 rounds since making his pro debut in 2014. His first two losses were both against Joshua Franco for the WBA Super Flyweight Title. Franco won their first meeting by close unanimous decision in 2020 and the first rematch saw Franco retain the title after the fight was ruled a no-decision in the second round when the champion claimed he couldn’t continue after suffering a phantom head butt. Another rematch was held in August, 2021 with Franco once again winning via a close unanimous decision.
Moloney has pretty good power as 61.5 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage and he had won four straight fights by KO until running into Franco the first time. Since losing the rematch with Franco he’s beaten Froilan Saludar by 10-round unanimous decision, stopped Gilberto Mendoza in the eighth round, stopped Alexander Espinoza after two, went the distance with Norbelto Jiminez, was halted by Nakatani and then decisioned Flores. After all this it means Moloney has stopped just two of his past nine opponents.
Moloney stands 5-feet-5-inches tall with a wingspan of 65 inches. Since turning pro after a fine amateur career, he has also captured several Australian, Oceania and Commonwealth belts in the bantamweight and junior bantamweight divisions. His biggest wins have been against the likes of Miguel Gonzalez, Selemani Bangaiza, Luis Concepcion, Rene Dacquel, Aramis Solis and Raymond Tabugon with Franco (twice) and Nakatani being the only men to beat him.
The 34-year-old Guevara makes the ring walk with a mark of 41-4-1 with 22 Ko’s and has boxed 317 rounds since turning pro in 2008. He measures 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 67-inch reach, so gives up an inch in height to Moloney but has a two-inch reach advantage. When it comes to power, 53.7 per cent of Guevara’s wins have come by stoppage and he’s gone the distance in his past five fights. The first loss for Guevara came at the hands of former world Champion John Riel Casimero by split decision in 2012 in a shot at the IBF Light Flyweight Title after being dropped in the first round.
He dropped another split decision in 2015 when Yu Kimura beat him for the WBC Light Flyweight Belt. He had a another shot at that belt in 2017 but lost a majority decision to Kenshiro Teraji. Guevara’s last defeat was also by split decision as he was edged by Carlos Cuadras in November in an attempt at the vacant WBC Interim Super Flyweight Title. Guevara captured the vacant WBC Light Flyweight Belt in 2014 when he stopped Akira Yaegashi in the seventh round in Japan in 2014.
He defended it against Richard Claveras and Ganigan Lopez before losing it to Yu Kimura. During his career Guevara has also won the vacant WBC Silver and NABA Light flyweight Belts as well as the WBC Fecarbox Super Flyweight Title. He also has wins over Karlius Diaz, Manuel Jiminez, Raul Garcia, Ruben Montoya Ramirez, Roberto Sanchez Cantu, Miguel Angel Herrera and Marvin Solano while his lone draw was a 12-round affair with Mario Rodriguez in defence of his WBC Silver Title.
Prediction…
Moloney has proven he belongs on the world stage but has fallen just short in competitive world title fights and suffered a highlight-reel KO at the hands of Junto Nakatani. However he’s not the type of boxer who’s gun shy after taking punishment. Guevara has a ton of experience and is a former world champ with enough power to make a statement here. Moloney needs to make sure he takes him seriously and if he’s at his best he should do enough to win a close fight at home.
Moloney wins if he’s at his best.
