My Pick

The 33-year-old Teixeira climbs through the ropes with a mark of 34-4 with 25 Ko’s and has 170 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut back in 2009. He stands just under 6-feet-tall with a 74.5-inch reach and has pretty good power in his punches as 73.5 per cent of his wins have come by way of stoppage, including his last three and he also displays plenty of skills in the ring. His first defeat came at the hands of Curtis Stevens in 2016 when he was stopped in the second round and that was basically the first time he took a step up in class opponent-wise.

He also lost to Paul Valenzuela Cuesta in April, 2022 when he was disqualified in the second round for an intentional rabbit punch. He then lost his third bout in a row three months later when he dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Magomed Kurbanov after being decked in the first round. Since then he’s stopped Adrien Perez, Carlos Rivero and Saltarin. The win over Rivero was for the vacant WBA Fedebol Middleweight Belt.

Teixeira won the vacant WBA Fedecentro Middleweight Title in 2012 when he stopped Samir Barbosa in the first round and then added the vacant WBC Youth Inter-Continental Super Welterweight Crown in 2012 when he stopped Omar Ramirez in the eighth round. He then captured the Interim WBO Latino Super Welterweight Title in 2014 when he stopped Ignacio Fraga in 145 seconds and in 2018 he beat Davi Eliasquevici via a 10-round unanimous decision for the vacant WBO Latino Super Welterweight Crown. He’s also beaten the likes of Nathaniel Gallimore, Mario Lozano and Patrick Allotey.

Zayas fights out of Sunrise, Florida and is just 21 years old. He’s boxed 71 rounds since making his pro debut in 2019 following his amateur career and carries around a perfect mark of 18-0 with 12 Ko’s which gives him a current knockout ratio of 66.7 per cent. He’s stopped his last two opponents but went the distance in his previous two outings. Zayas measures in at at 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 74-inch reach which sees him give up 1.5-inches in height to Teixeira.

As an amateur Zayas had over 130 fights from 2007 to 2018 and captured 11 national championship events including the 2018 U.S. Youth National Championships. He won the vacant WBO NABO Super Welterweight Title in August, 2022 when he stopped Elias Espadas in the fifth round after dropping him in the opening stanza. Zayas then added the vacant NABF Title four months later with an eight-round unanimous decision over Alexis Salazar Flores. He defended both belts against Ronald Cruz, Roberto Valenzuela and Jorge Fortea.

Prediction…

Teixeira is a solid, underrated boxer with skills, power and plenty of experience against solid opposition while Zayas is on his way up the rankings and is expected to someday become a world champion. He’s taking a step up in class this weekend and is in for a stiff test. He should do just enough to pass it but Teixeira certainly won’t make it an easy task and could last the distance.

Zayas is a skilled boxer and is 12 years younger than Teixeira.
