Subriel Matias vs Liam Paro Preview June 15th, 2024
IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Subriel Matias of Puerto Rico defends the belt for the second time when he takes on takes on undefeated Liam Paro of Australia this Saturday, June 15th. The 12-rounder from Puerto Rico, can be seen live on DAZN in most nations. Matias won the vacant title in February, 2023 when he stopped Jeremias Ponce of Argentina after the fifth round of a slugfest and then defended it against Shohjahon Ergashev in November by stopping him after the sixth round. Paro was last in the ring in December when he halted Montana Love in the sixth round to retain the WBO Global Junior Welterweight Belt.

The 32-year-old Matias climbs into the ring with an impressive record of 20-1 with all 20 wins coming by KO, which means he’s got a current knockout ratio of 95.2 per cent with 100 per cent of his wins coming by stoppage. He’s boxed 96 rounds since turning pro in 2016 following a brief amateur career and stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 71-inch reach. The lone pro defeat on Matias’ record came at the hands of Petros Ananyan in 2020 via a close 10-round unanimous decision after Matias was dropped in the seventh round.
He avenged that defeat two years later by stopping Ananyan in the ninth round. Matias’ biggest wins have been against Ergashev, Ponce, Patrick Lopez, Adrian Estrella, Breidis Prescott, Fernando Saucedo, Wilberth Lopez, Maxim Dadashev, Malik Hawkins and Batyrzhan Jukembayev. Sadly, Dadashev passed away at the age of 28 after sustaining injuries in the bout with Matias. He’s a dangerous boxer who simply lets his hands go until his opponent is counted out, or quits.
The 28-year-old Paro is a southpaw and climbs through the ropes with a perfect mark of 24-0 with 15 Ko’s and has fought 123 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016. He gave up rugby at the age of 13 to take up boxing and also had a pretty good amateur career as he won the Australian Youth National Championships in 2013 in the 140 lb division. Since turning pro he has captured the vacant Australian, the vacant WBO Youth, the vacant WBO Global and the vacant IBF International Super Lightweight Belts.
At just over 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 71-inch reach, he has a half-inch edge in height over Matias. As far as power is concerned, 62.5 per cent of Paro’s wins have come by way of stoppage but has gone distance in five of his last nine fights. He took a step up in class against Montana Love in December when he boxed for just the second time outside of Australia with his best wins coming over Brock Jarvis, Jose Aubel, Robert Tlatlik, Faith Keles, James Chereji, Steve Gago and Yomar Alamo.
Prediction…
Paro pulled off a minor upset over Montana Love late last year but is now arguably up against one of the most ferocious boxers currently in the sport. Matias has an extremely high work rate but isn’t the hardest target to hit and has been dropped before. However, he simply overwhelms his opponents from the start to finish of most rounds and has the power to turn a fight around with a single punch. This should be quite entertaining and a tough fight for as long as it lasts but I believe Matias keeps the belt due to his volume punching and athleticism.
All of Matias’ 20 wins have been by stoppage.
