Southpaw Elvis Rodriguez of the Dominican Republic takes on Jino Rodrigo of the Philippines in a 10-round battle of hard-hitting junior welterweights this Saturday, June 29th. The fight from Miami Beach, Florida, can be seen live on the ESPN platform in America while fans in Ireland and the UK can catch it on Sky Sports Action and those in Canada can catch it on TSN 2. Rodriguez stopped former world champion Viktor Postol in the seventh round in his last outing in July while Rodrigo halted Monico Laurente after the second round in February.

The 28-year-old Rodriguez owns a fine record of 15-1-1 with 13 wins coming by way of stoppage for a current knockout ratio of 86.7 per cent. He has just 74 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2018. Before that he enjoyed a fine amateur career as he made it to the final of the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games where he was beaten by Andy Cruz and also lost to Cruz in the quarterfinals of the 2017 AIBA World Championships and the 2017 Pan American Championship Final. He also competed in the World Series of Boxing in 2017.
Rodriguez stands 5-feet-10-inches tall with a wingspan of 71 inches. His lone pro defeat came at the hands of Kenneth Sims Jr by eight-round majority decision in 2021 for the vacant WBC USA Super Lightweight Title and his lone draw was a one-round technical draw against Joaquin Chavez in 2019 when Chavez was cut from an accidental headbutt and couldn’t continue. Rodriguez’s biggest wins have been against Viktor Postol, Luis Alberto Veron, Juan Pablo Romero,Juan Velasco and Joseph Adorno.
Rodrigo is 26 years old and climbs into the ring with a mark of 12-3-2 with 10 Ko’s. He made his pro debut in 2017 and also has 74 rounds of pro experience to his name. He measures 5-feet-7-inches tall with an unlisted reach, so gives up three inches in height to Rodriguez. Rodrigo also has dynamite in his fists as 83.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage, including his last six and he’s never been stopped.
Rodrigo’s first pro defeat came at the hands of Glenn Bismanos by way of a six-round split decision in 2018 and he also drew Bismanos over six rounds in their rematch three months later. He dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Marlon Paniamogan in 2019 and lost an eight-round unanimous decision to Kuntae Lee in 2023. His other draw was a two-round technical affair with Daffy Dempo in 2019 when Dempo was cut by an accidental headbutt. This will be Rodrigo’s second fight outside of his homeland and the first outside of Asia.
Prediction…
Both boxers have tons of power and neither has been stopped so this should be an interesting and fan-friendly fight. Rodriguez hasn’t really lived up to expectations as of yet but silenced some of his critics with his KO win over Viktor Postol last year. He’s faced tougher opposition as a pro and is bigger than Rodrigo but he definitely can’t take Rodrigo lightly and underestimate his skills and power. I’m expecting a close fight for a few rounds here but believe Rodriguez should do enough to pull it out, most likely by stoppage.
Rodriguez’s experience against better opposition should benefit him.
