My Pick
The 25-year-old Davis enters the fight with a perfect record of 10-0 with 7 Ko’s and has fought 68 rounds since making his pro debut in February, 2021. Davis enjoyed a superb amateur career which saw him win silver medals at the 2019 Pan American Games, the 2019 World Championships, and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan as a lightweight, losing to Cuba’s Andy Cruz in the final of each of those tournaments. Davis stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach and has had no problem adapting to pro boxing as he currently owns a knockout ratio of 70 per cent.
The only opponents to go the distance with him so far have been Jose Meza, who went six rounds in May, 2021 but lost every round in a unanimous decision defeat; Juan Carlos Burgos in December, 2022 who also lost every round and Francisco Patera last July as he went 10 rounds but was dropped in the eighth and managed to win just one round on one judge’s scorecard. Of course, Nahir Albright went the full 10 rounds and earned a draw with one judge last October but that majority-decision win for Davis was changed to a no-contest after he tested positive for marijuana.
Exceptional speed and power are what Davis brings to the ring as he continues his pro career. Understandably, he’s being brought along cautiously but each opponent he’s faced has entered the ring with a winning record. He took a step up in class by facing a former world champion in Pedraza the last time out. Davis won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Belt with his win over Burgos in December, 2022 and then picked up the vacant WBC USA Belt when he stopped Anthony Yigit in the ninth round four months later.
Madueno, who fights out of Orange, California is also 25 years old and makes the ring walk with a fine record of 31-2 with 28 Ko’s. He’s boxed 116 rounds since making his pro debut in 2017 following his amateur career. He measures 5-feet-8-inches tall with an unlisted reach so gives up an inch in height to Davis. As far as power is concerned, Madueno owns some heavy hands as 90.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage but he’s gone the distance in his last two fights and in three of the past six.
The first pro loss suffered by Madueno came at the hands of former world champion Jezzrel Corrales in 2-22 when he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision. He dropped Corrales in the opening round and each boxer had a point deducted in the third. Corrales also had a point taken off of him in the eighth stanza. Madueno’s other defeat was to Steve Claggett by 10-round unanimous decision last November in a shot at the NABA Super Lightweight Title and the vacant WBO International Super Lightweight Belt.
Prediction…
There isn’t really a weak side to Davis’ game and his power and boxing skills have simply been too much for all of his opponents so far. Madueno is a solid pro with plenty of experience for a young boxer but just 19 of his 33 opponents have had winning records so he’s taking a step up in class here. He certainly has enough power to cause some damage but doesn’t match up with Davis in any other area of the sport at this stage of their careers. I’m expecting Davis to earn another win and likely by stoppage, but he’ll need to be wary of Madueno’s power.
Davis has the edge in speed and overall boxing skills.
