My Pick
The 28-year-old Wilson, who fights out of Redcliffe, Australia, climbs through the ropes with a mark of 13-3 with 7 Ko’s and has boxed 97 rounds since making his pro debut in 2018. He had a solid amateur career before that as he made it to the quarterfinals of the 2018 Commonwealth Games and won the 2017 Australian National Championship and 2016 Australian Golden Gloves. He also captured the 2013 Australian Youth National Championship and fought in several other top-grade tournaments. Wilson measures just over 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach and carries average power in his fists as 53.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage.
However his last three wins have gone the distance. His power shouldn’t be taken lightly though as he nearly pulled off an upset against Emanuel Navarrete last year when he dropped him in the fourth round in a shot at the vacant WBO Super Featherweight Belt. Navarrete was the recipient of a long, controversial count by referee Chris Flores as video replays reportedly clocked Navarrete has having 27 rounds to recover from the knockdown after spitting out his mouthpiece. Wilson was then stopped five rounds later.
Since turning pro he’s won the vacant WBO International, IBF Youth, Australian, and WBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight Belts. He was stopped in the fifth round by Joe Noynay in July 2021 in his first shot at the WBO Asia Pacific Title after being dropped in the first and fourth rounds but stopped Noynay in the second round of their rematch eight months later. Noynay missed weight in that fight and the belt was on the line for Wilson only. After losing to Navarrete, he bounced back with a 10-round unanimous decision over Carlos Maria Alanis for the vacant WBO International Super Featherweight Title and then beat Jackson Jon England by 10-round unanimous decision before being stopped by Valdez in his last outing.
The 31-year-old Dib owns an impressive mark as he’s 21-1 with 11 Ko’s and has 108 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2015 after a fine amateur career. As an amateur he fought in the 2013, 2015 and 2015 Australian National Championships and made it to the Final in 2014 and the semifinals in 2015. He also lost to George Kambosos Jr and Josh Taylor as an amateur. Dib is the brother of former world champion Billy Dib. At 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 69-inch reach, Dib gives up just half-an-inch in height to Wilson and an inch in reach.
He possesses a little more power than Wilson though as 52.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including four of his past five. As a pro, Dib captured the vacant Australian Super Lightweight Title in 2021 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Hunter Ioane and the vacant Australasian Lightweight Belt via a ninth-round TKO over Miles Zalewski in 2023. However he lost the belt in his first defence when he suffered his lone pro defeat at the hands of Ibrahim Balla by 10-round majority decision.
Prediction…
Wilson is moving back up to the lightweight division after last fighting in the division in 2020. Dib has the power advantage here but Wilson has fought stiffer opposition as a pro as Dib has never fought outside of Australia and will be taking a step up in class. Wilson has been stopped in all three of his pro defeats so will need to be wary of Dib’s power. Wilson also needs a win here to remain relevant on the international boxing scene. I think Wilson’s experience should see him come through against Dib in a relatively close fight this Wednesday.
A close call but Wilson experience on the world stage.
