Here are the betting odds from online sportsbook BetOnline.ag (full review here).

  • Marcelia Cornejo +145
  • Cecilia Braekhus -175

My Pick

The 37-year-old Cornejo fights out of Los Angeles and enters the ring with a mark of 19-6 with 7 Ko’s and has boxed 150 rounds since making her pro debut in 2012. She has pretty good power for the women’s division with seven of her 19 wins coming by stoppage and a current knockout ratio of 36.8 per cent but has gone the distance in nine of her last 11 outings. Cornejo measures 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 72-inch reach so has good size for the junior welterweight division. Cornejo beat Latasha Burton by 10-round unanimous decision for the vacant WBC International Super Middleweight Title in 2015.

However, she was beaten by Kali Reis via split decision in her next outing for the vacant WBC Middleweight Title and dropped a majority decision to Franchon Crews Dezurn for the same vacant belt in 2018. She had a rematch with Dezurn in 2019 for the WBC and vacant WBO Super Middleweight titles in 2019 and lost a unanimous decision. The other losses on Cornejo’s record came at the hands of Tiffany Ward by four-round unanimous decision in 2013, to Alma Ibarra by eight-round unanimous decision in 2021 and by 10-round unanimous decision to Claressa Shields last june in a shot at the undisputed Middleweight Title.

Braekhus is now 42 years old. She was born in Colombia and adopted by Norwegian parents as a youngster and grew up in Bergen. She enjoyed a successful kickboxing career before trying her hand at boxing and racked up an amateur record mark of 75-5, winning a silver medal at the 2005 World Championships, gold at the 2005 European Championships and silver at the 2004 European Championships. She then turned pro in 2007, has boxed 320 rounds and owns a record of 37-2-1 with 9 Ko’s.

Braekhus stands just over 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 67-inch reach so gives up 2.5-inches in height and five inches in reach to Cornejo. As far as power goes, just 24.3 per cent of her wins have come by stoppage and she’s gone the distance in her last eight bouts with her last win by stoppage coming back in 2017 when she halted Mikaela Lauren in the sixth round. She won her first world titles in 2009 when she beat Vinni Skovgaard for the vacant WBA and WBC Welterweight Titles. The next belt added was the vacant WBO Welterweight version with a unanimous decision over Victoria Cisneros in 2010.

Braekhus defended those titles numerous times and then captured the IBF version with a unanimous decision over Ivana Habazin in 2014. The IBO belt was next via a unanimous decision over Chris Namus in 2016. She made several more defences but then lost all five welterweight belts when she dropped a majority decision to Jessica McCaskill in August, 2020. Braekhus attempted to regain the titles in a rematch seven months later but this time lost by unanimous decision. In total, Braekhus was the undisputed women’s Welterweight Boss from 2014 to 2020.

Prediction…

There’s no doubt, Braekhus is or was one of the best female boxers out there with Jessica McCaskill being the only woman to beat her. However, she’s now 42 years old and lacks power. Cornejo is no spring chicken either at 37 years and she’s on a three-fight winning streak while Braekhus has won just one of her last four fights to go with a draw and two defeats. Braekhus will have to rely on her boxing skills here but she’ll need to get inside the bigger Cornejo. Braekhus could have just enough left in the tank to pull out a win here and I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and a slight edge in a fight that goes the distance.

Braekhus has the experience to pull off one more win.
