Jarrett Hurd vs Jeison Rosario Preview August 21st, 2024
Former IBF, IBO, and WBA Jr. Middleweight Champion Jarrett Hurd of Maryland, USA will be back in the ring this Wednesday, August 1st when he takes on Former IBF and WBA Junior Middleweight Champ Jeison Rosario of the Dominican Republic. The 10-round middleweight bout from Plant City, Florida can be seen live on Probox in most nations as well as on Sportsnet World in Canada. Hurd was beaten via a 10-round split decision by Luis Arias in June, 2021 after dropping him in the ninth round and then sat out until March, 2023 when he came back and was stopped by Jose Resendiz due to a severely lacerated lip. Hurd was trailing on all three scorecards when the fight was called off in the 10th and final round. He bounced back with a win in his most recent contest in December when he stopped Tyi Edmonds in the fourth round. Rosario last boxed in November when he halted Israel Valerio Nina in the second round to rebound after being stopped by Brian Mendoza in the fifth round in his previous outing 12 months earlier.

My Pick
The 33-year-old Hurd won the vacant IBF Jr Middleweight title in February, 2017 when he stopped Tony Harrison in the ninth round and defended it for the first time against Austin Trout eight months later when Trout couldn’t come out for the 11th round. Hurd won the IBO and WBA crowns by beating Erislandy Lara by split decision in April, 2018 and then defended all the titles against Jason Welborn by fourth-round stoppage in December, 2018 before running into Julian Williams and losing his silverware by unanimous decision.
Hurd turned pro back in 2012 after reportedly going 32-8 as an amateur and has 160 rounds of experience since then with a 25-3 record with 17 Ko’s. He’s a former three-time Golden Gloves winner in Washington D.C and has managed to beat opponents such as Francisco Santana, Lara, Harrison, Trout, Ionut Dan Ion, Oscar Molina, Frank Galarza and Eric Mitchell. Hurd possesses an aggressive style and good power as 68 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage, but has stopped just two of his last seven opponents.
Hurd, who stands just under 6-feet-tall with a 78 inch reach, is a relatively low key and somewhat underrated boxer who is quite fan friendly due to his power and rock-em-sock-em style in the ring. His bout against Lara in 2018 was one of the best of the year and he managed to drop the former champion in the 12th round to insure the victory. His contest against Williams was also an entertaining and raucous affair and he had to pick himself up from the canvas in the second round. Hurd’s just as comfortable brawling as he is at boxing.
The 29-year-old Rosario took the IBF and WBA Jr. Middleweight Titles from Julian ‘J Rock’ Williams during William’s first defence in January, 2020 when he stopped him in the fifth round but lost them to Jermell Charlo in his first defence when he was stopped in the eighth round in September, 2020. Rosario’s mark now stands at 24-4-1 with 18 Ko’s. His first pro defeat came at the hands of Nathaniel Gallimore by way of sixth-round TKO in April, 2017.
His third loss was to Erickson Lubin by sixth-round KO in 2021, nine months after losing to Charlo and of course he was also stopped by Mendoza in 2022. Rosario’s lone draw was a six-round affair with Mark Anthony Hernandez in February, 2018. He turned pro in 2013 and has 120 rounds of experience under his belt. Since. He also has good power as 75 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage including seven of his last eight. However, he’s been stopped in all four of his losses so doesn’t appear to have the sturdiest of chins.
Rosario, who fights out of Miami, Florida stands 5-feet-11-inches tall with a 70-inch reach so gives up just half-an-inch in height to Hurd but surrenders eight inches in reach. He’s also beaten Mark Anthony Hernandez, Jorge Cota, Juan Rodriguez, Jamontay Clark, Justin DeLoach and Salim Larbi. Rosario won the vacant Dominican Republic Welterweight Title with a second-round TKO over Jose Vidal Soto in 2014 and the vacant WBA Fedecaribe Super Welterweight Belt with a third-round stoppage of Euri Gonzalez in 2015.
Prediction…
Hurd and Rosario are two former world champions who haven’t really fared too well recently as Hurd has lost two of his last three fights and Rosario has lost three of his past seven. However, both are coming off of knockout victories late last year. Hurd as arguably faced tougher opposition over the years and is one tough son of a gun, win or lose. Rosario’s four defeats have all come by stoppage so he’s going to need a sturdier chin this week. Rosario has the skills to win this fight on points but I’m expecting Hurd’s aggressive style to be a bit too much for him.
Hurd’s attacking style should prove to be successful.
