Nikita Tzsyu vs Koen Mazoudier Preview August 28th, 2024

The vacant IBF Australasian and WBO Inter-Continental Super Welterweight Titles are on the line this Wednesday August 28th as unbeaten Nikita Tszyu and Koen Mazoudier tangle in a 10-rounder in Sydney. The fight can be seen Down Under on Fox Sports, Main Event, and Kayo. Tszyu, the son of former world champion Kostya Tszyu and the younger brother of Tim Tszyu, last fought in April when he beat Danilo Creati via a 10-round unanimous decision. Mazoudier last saw action in March when he stopped Travis Druce in the fifth round to snap a two-fight winless skid of a loss and draw.

  • Koen Mazoudier +550
  • Nikita Tszyu -900

My Pick

The 26-year-old Tszyu is a southpaw who climbs into the ring with a perfect mark of 9-0 with seven of those wins coming by knockout. He obviously carries plenty of power in his fists with a current knockout ratio of 77.8 per cent and has halted five of his last six opponents. The two men to go the distance with him were Creati in his last outing and Ben Horn, who went six rounds with him in July, 2022 and dropped a six-round unanimous decision. Tszyu just turned pro in March of 2022 and has just 38 rounds of experience under his belt since then.

Before that, he enjoyed a brief amateur career which saw him capture the 2014 Australian National Championship in the 63 kilogram (139 lb) Junior Final. He also won the 2013 Junior Final in the 54 kilogram (119 lb) division. Tszyu hung up his gloves at the age of 16 to focus on his education and that’s why he didn’t make his pro debut until the age of 23. Unfortunately, there’s no height and reach information for him.

As for Mazoudier, the 28-year-old makes the ring walk with a mark of 12-3-1 with 5 Ko’s and has boxed 114 rounds since making his pro debut in 2018. He stands just over 5-feet-11-inches tall with a 71-inch reach and carries below-average power in his arsenal as just 41.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s halted just one of his past seven opponents. As an amateur, he reached the semifinals of the 2017 Australian National Championships and made it to the quarterfinals in 2015.

The three defeats on Mazoudier’s record came to Luke Woods by 10-round majority decision in 2019 in a shot at the vacant IBF Oceania-Orient Super Welterweight Belt; to Wade Ryan by 10th-round TKO in 2021 in a crack at the IBO International Super Welterweight Title and by 10-round majority decision to Benjamin Hussain last August. As a pro, he captured the vacant WBF Australasian Super Welterweight Crown by halting Will Parsons after six rounds. The lone draw on his record was a 10-round affair with Ben Mahoney in March, 2023.

Prediction…

Neither boxer has fought any top-level opposition at this point of their careers but Tzsyu has a pretty big edge when it comes to power. This may be a relatively close fight for a few rounds but I’m expecting Tszyu to eventually catch Mazoudier and put an end to the proceedings before the 10 rounds are over.

Tszyu’s power and aggressiveness should be the difference.
