My Pick
The 32-year-old Plant, who now resides in Las Vegas, won the IBF title in January, 2019 when he beat Jose Uzcategui by unanimous decision and dropped him twice on his way to victory. He then defended the belt against Mike Lee by third-round TKO in 2019 before stopping the unheralded Vincent Feigenbutz in 2020 and beating Caleb Truax by unanimous decision in January, 2021 before losing to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez via an 11th-round stoppage in November, 2021 for his first loss as a pro.
Plant enters the ring with an impressive record of 22-2 with 13 Ko’s and has boxed 154 rounds since turning pro in 2014. He’s a good-sized 168-pounder at 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 74-inch wingspan but doesn’t really possess great one-punch power, regardless of his sensational ninth-round knockout of Anthony Dirrell in 2022. He has a good knockout ratio of 59.1 per cent in his victories. Plant enjoyed a fine amateur career and fought in the 2011 and 2013 Golden Gloves tournaments.
He was also an alternate for the American Olympic Team for the 2012 Games in London, England. His best wins as a pro have been over Dirrell, Truax, Lee, Uzcategui, Rogelio Medina, Juan De Angel, Carlos Galvan, Thomas Awimbono, Adasat Rodriguez and Andrew Hernandez. He possesses fine mobility, skills and speed and will try to utilize those attributes against McCumby. He also has a pretty good chin despite being stopped by Alvarez.
The 31-year-old McCumby, who fights out of the Phoenix, Arizona area, owns a perfect record of 28-0 with 21 Ko’s but is basically an unknown boxer on the world scene. He has 95 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2010 as a teenager. As an amateur he made it to the semifinals of the 2009 USA Junior National Championships. He measures 6-feet tall with a 74-inch reach so gives up an inch in height to Plant. McCumby has more power than Plant as 75 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including five of his last seven.
McCumby has never faced a legitimate contender as of yet as his biggest bouts have come against boxers such as Milton Nunez, Brian Holstein, Dion Savage, Donovan George, Jessie Nicklow, Felipe Romero, Vicente Martin Rodriguez and Rodolfo Ezequiel Martinez. McCumby has fought just three times since November, 2018 as he stepped away from the sport after his win over Romero and didn’t return until stopping Rodriguez in May, 2023.
Prediction…
Plant has plenty of more experience against top-level opponents but McCumby can’t be overlooked as he possesses good skills and power. The oddsmakers look at this fight as a bit of a mismatch but even though it may be closer than expected, Plant should have his hand raised and has a good chance of stopping McCumby.
Plant is one or two levels above McCumby at this stage.
