Rolando Romero vs Manuel Jaimes Preview September 14th, 2024
Rolando Romero of Las Vegas, Nevada returns to the ring in his hometown this Saturday, September 14th when he takes on Manuel Jaimes of San Jose, California. The 10-round junior welterweight scrap is on the undercard of the Alvarez vs Berlanga battle and can be seen live in most nations on pay-per-view. Romero last fought in March when he was stopped by Isaac Cruz in the eighth round. In his previous bout in May, 2023 he was behind on all three scorecards to Ismael Barroso and was awarded a highly-controversial ninth-round TKO by referee Tony Weeks. Jaimes last stepped into the ring in July when he beat Jonathan Romero by an eight-round unanimous decision.

- Manuel Jaimes +190
- Rolando Romero -240
My Pick
Romero is 28 years old and has just 74 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2016 following his amateur career after starting boxing at the age of 17. He climbs through the ropes with a mark of 15-2 with 13 Ko’s with his first defeat coming at the hands of Gervonta Davis in a shot at the WBA Lightweight Title when he was stopped in the sixth round in May, 2022. He possesses plenty of power in his punches as 86.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and has gone the distance just twice as a pro.
He beat Jackson Marinez by unanimous decision in August 2020 for the WBA Interim Lightweight Title and the only other opponent he went the distance with was Javier Martinez, who went six rounds back in August, 2018 with Romero earning a unanimous decision. Romero has beaten some other good boxers along the way such as Anthony Yigit and Avery Sparrow and was doing well against Davis until he got caught. Romero stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 68-inch and will fighting at the 140 lb junior welterweight division for the third time.
The 24-year-old Jaimes makes the ring walk with a fine mark of 16-1-1 with 11 Ko’s and has boxed 84 rounds since making his pro debut in 2018. As an amateur he fought in the preliminary round at the 2017 USA Youth National Championships and made it to the 2016 USA Junior Olympics Semi-Final and 2016 USA Junior National Championships Semi-Final. He stands just 5-feet-6-inches tall with an unlisted reach so gives up two inches in height to Romero.
The lone loss on Jaimes’ record came at the hands of Pedro Bernal Rodriguez in April, 2022 when he dropped an eight-round unanimous decision in a shot at the WBC Youth World Lightweight Title. His lone draw was also in 2021 and was an eight-round affair with Alejandro Frias Rodriguez. Jaimes managed to capture the WBC Youth Lightweight Title in 2020 when he beat Christian Santiago Vazquez by eight-round unanimous decision. As far as power goes, 68.7 per cent of Jaimes’ wins have been by stoppage but he’s gone the distance in four of his last five fights.
Prediction…
Romero has plenty of power but doesn’t have the greatest chin so he usually wins by stoppage or is stopped himself as he’s gone the distance just twice as a pro. Jaimes has the power do to some damage if he connects but the toughest opposition he’s faced so far has been Jonathan Romero, Moises Flores and Belmar Preciado. Romero looked good against Davis, but brutal against Barroso and Cruz, so when he’s good he’s good but when he’s bad he’s quite bad. This fight could go either way but Romero really needs a win here to salvage his young career. That should give him the motivation needed to pound out a victory.
I think Romero rebounds from his loss to Cruz.
