IBO Super Featherweight Champion Anthony Cacace of Belfast, Northern Ireland will be defending his belt against former IBF Featherweight Champion Josh Warrington of England this Saturday, September 21st. The 12-rounder from Wembley Stadium in London, England can be seen live in most nations on pay-per-view platforms including DAZN on the undercard of the Dubois vs Joshua heavyweight clash. Cacace last saw action in May when he stopped IBF Champion Joe Cordina in the eighth round in an upset. Warrington’s last fight resulted in a seventh-round TKO loss at the hands of Leigh Wood last October. It was his second straight defeat as he lost his title to Luis Alberto Lopez by majority decision 10 months earlier. Cacace was supposed to defend his IBF Belt against Eduardo Nunez but the IBF are allowing him to meet Warrington in a non-title affair. If Warrington beats Cacace on Saturday the IBF Belt will be declared vacant.

The 35-year-old Cacace is a southpaw who climbs through the ropes with an impressive mark of 22-1 with 8 Ko’s and has 152 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2012 following his amateur days. As an amateur he won the Ulster Championships in 2008 and 2009 and made the final of the 2008 Irish National Championships and won the 2007 Irish Under-19 championships. He measures 5-feet-10-inches tall but has an unlisted reach so is three inches taller than Warrington.
The lone blemish on Cacace’s pro record is a 12-round unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Martin J Ward in 2017 in a shot at the British and Commonwealth Super Featherweight Titles. As far as power goes, Cacace doesn’t possess much of it as just 36.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s gone the distance in eight of his past nine outings. However, he certainly displayed plenty of power in his fight against Cordina.
Cacace won the British Title in 2019 via a 12-round split decision over Sam Bowen and defended it against Leon Woodstock by unanimous decision. He also captured the IBO Belt in 2022 with a split decision over Michael Magnesi and defended it against Damian Wrzesinski in May, 2023 before meeting Cordina. Cacae also won the vacant British Celtic Super Featherweight Title in 2015 with a 10th-round stoppage over Ronnie Clark.
The 33-year-old Warrington of Leeds enters the contest with a record of 31-3-1 with 8 Ko’s. The eight stoppages may mean he doesn’t appear to be blessed with too much power either but his last two wins have come by way of TKO. However, he’s won just two of his last six fights with three losses and a draw and just 25.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. Warrington first won the IBF title when he beat Lee Selby by split decision in May, 2018 and then defended it against Carl Frampton by unanimous decision in December and Kid Galahad by split decision in June, 2019.
He then stopped Sofiane Takoucht in the second round but gave up the belt as he didn’t want to face Galahad again in a mandatory defence. He faced Mauricio Lara in his next two fights and was stopped in the ninth round in February, 2021 for his first loss as a pro. He faced Lara in a rematch seven months later but the bout was declared a no-decision in the second round when Lara suffered a cut over his left eye from an accidental headbutt. Warrington regained the title in March, 2022 when he halted Kiko Martinez in the seventh round but lost it nine months later to Luis Alberto Lopez via majority decision.
Warrington stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 67-inch and has boxed 268 rounds since making his pro debut in 2009 following his amateur career. He’s also captured several regional and minor titles since turning pro including the English, British, Commonwealth, European and WBC International Featherweight Titles. He’s fought all of his bouts in his homeland with his most recognizable foes so far being Lopez, Lara, Martinez, Galahad, Frampton, Selby, Patrick Hyland, Rendall Munroe, Martin Lindsay, Hisashi Amagasa and Dennis Ceylan.
Prediction…
Cacace definitely surprised a few fans with his impressive win over Cordina but now he has to prove that he isn’t a flash in the pan or a one-hit wonder. He has plenty of confidence but is 35 years of age. However, Warrington has hit a rough patch in his career with three defeats a draw and just one win in his last five fights and was stopped in two of them. I’m expecting Cacace to retain his title on Saturday in an action fight and there’s a good chance he records another stoppage.
Warrington’s current form and lack of power will lead to a Cacace victory.
