Chris Colbert vs Omar Salcido Gamez Preview October 16th, 2024

Chris Colbert of Brooklyn, New York will step back into the ring this Wednesday, October 16th when he takes on Mexico’s Omar Salcido Gamez in a 10-round lightweight battle. The contest takes place in Plant City, Florida and can be seen live on ProBox. Colbert is trying to get back on track after being stopped by Jose Valenzuela in the sixth round in December in a rematch after Colbert beat him by a controversial 10-round unanimous decision in March, 2023 by scores of 95-94 across the board. Gamez last boxed in December as well when he beat Luis Coria by an eight-round unanimous decision.

My Pick

The 28-year-old Colbert carries a record of 17-2 with 6 Ko’s. He earned a shot at the interim WBA Super Featherweight Title by stopping Miguel Beltran Jr in the first round for the vacant NABA-USA Lightweight Title in September, 2019. He then beat former world champion Jezzrel Corrales by unanimous decision for the interim title and defended it by stopping Jaime Arboleda in the 11th round and decisioning Tugstsogt Nyambayar before losing to Hector Luis Garcia by 12-round unanimous decision in February, 2022 for his first pro defeat and was dropped in the seventh round.

Colbert has fought 133 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015 following a fine amateur career. He was the Daily News Golden Gloves champion of New York City in 2014 and won gold at the 2015 National Championships and qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic trials. However he decided to turn pro as he believed there was too much politics in the amateurs. Colbert stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 71-inch reach with excellent speed and boxing skills.

He owns a decent chin despite being dropped by Garcia and stopped by Valenzuela, but doesn’t have much in the way of one-punch power though as just 35.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. His lack of power hasn’t always been a problem though due to his slick boxing skills but he was thoroughly beaten by both Garcia and Valenzuela and he’s stopped just three of his last nine opponents in Arboleda, Beltran and Mario Briones.

Gamez is just 24 years old and climbs through the ring ropes with a mark of 19-1 with 13 Ko’s and now fights out of Lakeside, California. He turned pro back in 2016 as a teenager and has 84 rounds of experience under his belt since. He measures 5-feet-7-inches tall with an unlisted reach so gives up an inch in height to Colbert. When it comes to power, Gamez is above average as 68.4 per cent of his wins have come by way of stoppage. He’s gone the distance in his past two outings after stopping his previous five opponents.

The lone defeat in Gamez’s career came at the hands of Jose Nunez last October when he dropped a 10-round unanimous decision. Just nine of his 20 opponents have entered the ring with a winning record so Gamez will be taking a step up in class against Colbert this week. It will be his third straight fight in America and third overall in the country. His biggest wins have been against the likes of Ulises Perez Torres, Jesus Acosta Ayala and Erick Encinia.

Prediction…

Colbert is more mobile than Gamez and possesses superior boxing skills and speed but Gamez comes out on top in the power department. Colbert’s style is a bit more effective though especially if he lets his hands go and his chin holds up and he needs to bounce back after losing two of his last three fights. I’m expecting him to put his skill and experience to use and come out on top here.

Colbert edges Gamez when it comes to skill.
