Keyshawn Davis vs Gustavo Lemos Preview November 8th, 2024

Unbeaten former amateur star Keyshawn Davis of Norfolk, Virginia returns to the ring this Saturday, July 6th as he takes on Gustavo Lemos in Davis’ hometown. The 10-round lightweight tilt can be seen live in America on ESPN+ while fans in the UK and Ireland can catch it on Sky Sports+. Davis last fought in July when he beat Miguel Madueno by a wide 10-round unanimous decision to defend his WBO Inter-Continental, WBC USA, and IBF USBA Lightweight Belts. Lemos was last in action in April when he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to unbeaten prospect Richardson Hitchins in what was billed as an IBF Super Lightweight Eliminator.

  • Keyshawn Davis – 800

My Pick

The 25-year-old Davis enters the fight with a perfect record of 11-0 with 7 Ko’s and has fought 78 rounds since making his pro debut in February, 2021. Davis enjoyed a superb amateur career which saw him win silver medals at the 2019 Pan American Games, the 2019 World Championships, and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan as a lightweight, losing to Cuba’s Andy Cruz in the final of each of those tournaments. Davis stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch reach and has had no problem adapting to pro boxing as he currently owns a knockout ratio of 63.6 per cent.

The only opponents to go the distance with him so far have been Jose Meza, who went six rounds in May, 2021 but lost every round in a unanimous decision defeat; Juan Carlos Burgos in December, 2022 who also lost every round; Francisco Patera in July, 2023, who went 10 rounds but was dropped in the eighth and managed to win just one round on one judge’s scorecard and Madueno, who won just one round on all three scorecards in July. Nahir Albright also went the full 10 rounds and with Davis and earned a draw with one judge in October, 2023 but that majority-decision win for Davis was changed to a no-contest after he tested positive for marijuana.

Exceptional speed and power are what Davis brings to the ring as he continues his pro career. Understandably, he’s being brought along cautiously but each opponent he’s faced has entered the ring with a winning record. He took a step up in class by facing a former world champion in Jose Pedraza in February and stopped him in the sixth round to win the vacant IBF USBA Belt. Davis won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Belt with his win over Burgos in December, 2022 and then picked up the vacant WBC USA Belt when he stopped Anthony Yigit in the ninth round four months later.

The 28-year-old Lemos owns an impressive record of 29-1 with 19 Ko’s and has boxed 142 rounds since turning pro in 2016. He has above-average power in his arsenal as 65.5 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including his last 10 in a row. Lemos tands just over 5-feet-5-inches tall but unfortunately has an unlisted reach so is 3.5-inches shorter than Davis. He won the vacant IBF Latino Junior Welterweight Title in 2018 via a fourth-round KO over Ruben Dario Lopez.

Lemos added the vacant IBF Latino Lightweight Belt in 2018 when he moved down in weight and stopped Miguel German Acosta in the third stanza and defended it three times. He won the IBF Youth Lightweight Belt in 2019 by halting Jonathan Jose Eniz in the third round. Next on the list for Lemos was the vacant IBF Latino super Lightweight Belt again in 2020 with a second-round stoppage of Jakmani Hurtado. He also has wins over Uriel Perez, Jorge Paez Jr., Yeison Gonzalez and former world champion Lee Selby. This will be Lemos’ second fight outside of his homeland as his first resulted in his loss to Hitchins in Las Vegas.

Prediction…

There isn’t really a weak side to Davis’ game and his power combined with his smooth boxing skills have simply been too much for all of his opponents so far. Lemos is a solid and sturdy pro with enough power of his own to cause some damage if he connects cleanly. However he doesn’t really match up with Davis in any other area of the sport at this stage of their careers. I’m expecting Davis to earn another win here and also feel the fight will go the distance. Still, he needs to be very wary of Lemos’ power.

Davis has the edge in speed and overall boxing skills.
