My Pick
Luan is 28 years old and enters the fight with a mark of 5-8-2 with 2 Ko’s and doesn’t carry much power at all in his arsenal with just two stoppage wins in his 15 fights. However, two of his five victories have come by KO, including his last two outings. Luan stands 5-feet-3-inches tall but unfortunately his reach is unlisted. He made his pro debut in 2020 and has boxed 83 rounds since. There was certainly a bad stretch in Luan’s career as he lost seven fights in a row between June, 2022 and April 24.
But on the bright side, the defeats were all by unanimous decision and he was never stopped. He was halted for the first time in his career this September though when Sento Ito beat him via an eighth-round TKO in Japan. The two draws on Luan’s record came against Bayarsaikhan Enkhamgalan over six rounds this May and with Jun Qi over six rounds in 2020 in Luan’s second pro bout. He’s struggled when moving up in class with his losses to Rungvisai, Wulan Tuolehazi and Phongsaphon Panyakum with his loss to Panyakum by 10-round unanimous decision in March being for the Asian Boxing Federation Super Bantamweight Title.
The 37-year-old southpaw Rungvisai pulled off an upset in 2017 when he beat Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez by a controversial majority decision for the WBC Super Flyweight Title. He then defended the crown against Chocolatito in their rematch in September, 2018 by fourth-round stoppage and beat Juan Francisco Estrada by majority decision. He defended the title once more and then lost it to Estrada via unanimous decision in their rematch in April, 2019.
He enters this contest with a fine mark of 57-6-1 with 46 Kos. His other losses have come against Carlos Cuadras by eighth-round technical decision in May, 2014; a 10-round unanimous decision to Kenji Oba in February, 2010; a third-round KO to Yushin Yafuso in June, 2009 and a third-round TKO to Akira Yaegashi in March, 2009. His two stoppage losses came in his first two pro fights and he drew his third outing when he went six rounds with Sean Patavikorngym. He was halted for the third and latest time in his career in 2022 when Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez stopped him in the eighth round in a shot at the WBC Super Flyweight Title.
His pro debut came in March, 2009 and he’s boxed 282 rounds since. Rungvisai has lost just four times since dropping his first two fights and had a 20-fight winning streak going with 15 knockouts until losing to Estrada. He’s currently riding a seven-fight winning streak since losing to Rodriguez. Rungvisai has also beaten Yota Sato, Amnat Ruenroeng, Kwanthai Sithmorseng and Jose Salgado. His win over Sato in 2013 saw him capture the WBC World Title but he lost it in his second defence to Cuadras.
Rungvisai measures 5-feet-3-inches tall with a 63.5-inch reach so is the same height as Luan. He has good power in his punches as 80.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he’s gone the distance in his last three fights. He has a 6-3 mark with 3 Ko’s in world title fights and has gone 4-4 with 2 Ko’s against former, current or future world champions. Since turning pro Rungvisai has also captured the WBC Asian Boxing Council Super Flyweight Title and WBC Silver Super Flyweight Title as well as the WBC World Super Flyweight Title twice and the Ring Magazine Super Flyweight Championship. His bouts against Estrada were also for the lineal Super Flyweight Championship.
Prediction…
Rungvisai keeps himself busy by taking on limited opposition when he’s not fighting for world titles but he’s 37 years old now. He fought six times last year but this is just his second bout in 2024. Luan also keeps active as this is his eighth contest this year. Rungvisai is now in the twilight of his career but he should still have enough left in the tank to beat Luan for the second time this year.
Rungvisai’s experience and power should be the difference.
