  • Antonio Vargas -280

My Pick

Vargas, who fights out of Kissimmee, Florida is 28 years old and carries around a record of 18-1 with 10 Ko’s. He’s got 90 rounds of experience to his name since turning pro in 2017 following an extensive amateur career. He captured a a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games as a flyweight and boxed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, losing in the round of 16 to Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan. His lone defeat as a pro came at the hands of Jose Maria Cardenas when he was stopped in 113 seconds in May, 2019.

Vargas beat Jorge Perez via an eight-round unanimous decision to win the vacant NABA Jr Bantamweight Title. He also has wins over Felipe Rivas, Hernan Marquez, Lucas Rafael Baez, Jesus Martinez and Michell Banquez. Twelve of Vargas’ 19 pro opponents have had winning records and he has won 55.6 per cent of his fights by stoppage, including five of the past six. Vargas measures just over 5-feet-5-inches tall with a 66-inch reach.

Guerrero is just 24 years old and climbs through the ropes with a perfect mark of 22-0 with 13 Ko’s and has 109 rounds of pro experience under his belt since making his debut in 2018 as a teenager. He measures 5-feet-6-inches tall, but unfortunately there’s no reach information for him, so is just half-an-inch taller than Vargas. He also carries around above-average power as 59.1 per cent of his victories have been by stoppage but he’s gone the distance in five of his past seven fights.

Thirteen of Guerrero’s 22 opponents have had winning records and his last five fights have been held in America. He’s never taken on a legitimate contender as of yet as his biggest wins have been against the likes of Jordan Escobar, Engel Gomez, Wilver Hernandez, Charlie Clemente-Andino and Misael Gracia Acevedo, so he’ll be taking a step up in class against Vargas this weekend.

Prediction…

Guerrero and Vargas match up closely to each other in just about all areas so this fight may come down to the will to win and heart. Whoever lets his hands go the most and shows he wants to win it will have the edge. Vargas was pretty impressive against Rodriguez in his last outing and if he can replicate that performance then I have to give him the edge over Guerrero this Friday the 13th.

A tossup with Vargas coming off of a big win.
