Unbeaten junior welterweight Dalton Smith of Sheffield, England will be facing France’s Walid Ouizza in Nottingham this Saturday, January 25th. The 12-rounder from Nottingham, England is for the vacant European Belt as well as Ouizza’s WBC Silver Title and can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Smith last boxed in March when he stopped Jose Zepeda in the fifth round with a wicked body shot to capture the vacant WBC Silver Junior Welterweight Title. My Pick
Ouizza is a 33-year-old veteran who owns a mark of 19-2 with 8 Ko’s and has boxed 115 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 following a good amateur career. Unfortunately there’s no height and reach information for Ouizza so we don’t know how he stacks up against Smith in those departments. We do know he’s not the hardest hitter in the 140 lb division though as just 33.3 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage and he’s gone the distance in four of his last five fights. The first loss on Ouizza’s record came at the hands of Brice Bassole by an eight-round unanimous decision in 2017.
He was then beaten again two fights later when he dropped another eight-round unanimous decision to Sandy Messaoud. Since then he’s won 11 straight fights, but against limited opposition. Also, just 10 of his 21 opponents have entered the ring with a winning record. Ouizza won the vacant French Junior Welterweight Title in 2021 when he stopped Jean Moraiti in the second round. He then added the vacant European Belt in 2023 with a 12-round split decision over Alejandro Moya and edged Charlemagne Metonyekpon the same year for the vacant European Silver Junior Welterweight Crown.
Smith is 27 years old and makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 16-0 with 12 Ko’s and has boxed 98 rounds since making his pro debut in 2019. As an amateur, he won the 2018 ABA Championships as a junior welterweight, captured a silver medal at the 2014 European Youth Championships and a bronze at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games as a lightweight. He also fought at the 2013 World Junior Championships and reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Youth Championships. Smith also competed for the World Series of Boxing from 2016 to 2018 for the British Lionhearts.
As a pro, Smith also won the vacant British Junior Welterweight Title in 2021 when he stopped Lee Appleyard in the sixth round. He added the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Junior Welterweight Belt the same year by beating Brian Pelaez by 10-round unanimous decision and took the vacant WBC International Silver Junior Welterweight Belt in 2022 when he stopped Ray Moylette in the 10th and final round. He won the vacant British Title again in 2022 by halting Sam O’Maison in the sixth round.
Smith measures just under 5-feet-10-inches tall and also has an unlisted reach. However, as far as power is concerned, he blows Ouizza out of the water as 75 per cent of his wins have been by stoppage, but he has been forced to go the distance in two of his last four fights. Even though he’s a solid pro with good skills and power, Smith took a big step up in class last year as Jose Zepeda was the first highly-ranked contender he faced.
Prediction…
Smith is a fan-friendly boxer with quire a bit of power and is improving with each outing. He’s also six years younger than Ouizza, who lacks power but has a good chin and has never been stopped. Smith should be entering the prime of his career now at the age of 27 and needs to be aggressive and land with authority. Considering Smith’s also fighting at home, I think he’ll have no problem doing enough to claim the belts this weekend.
Smith has much more power than Ouizza and is six years younger.
