Kyonosuke Kameda vs Luis Nery Preview Feb. 22nd, 2025

Former WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Luis Nery of Mexico is back in the ring this Saturday, Feb. 22nd as he takes on Kyonosuke Kameda of Japan in a 10-round featherweight contest in Tijuana. Nery’s last bout was in May when he was stopped by Naoya Inoue in a shot at the IBF, WBC and WBO Super Bantamweight titles. Nery dropped the champion in the first round but Inoue returned the favour in the second and fifth rounds before ending the contest a round later. Kameda last saw action in December when he halted Angelo Beltran in just 78 seconds. Saturday’s fight will reportedly be aired by ESPN+ in America and ESPN Knockout in Latin America.

My Pick
The 26-year-old Kameda climbs through the ropes with a mark of 15-3-2 with 9 Ko’s and has boxed 98 rounds since making his pro debut in 2018. he stands just over 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70.5-inch reach and has decent power as 60 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he’s gone the distance in seven of his past 10 outings. Kameda, who hails from Osaka, was stopped in his pro debut in 2018 as Shinnosuke Kimoto halted him in the second round.
He bounced back with three straight wins and was then held to a four-round draw by Ryugo Ushijima. Three fights later he dropped a four-round split decision to Jinki Maeda. Kameda won the vacant Japanese Youth Featherweight Title in 2021 when he stopped Tsubasa Narai in the second round but lost it in his first defence via an eight-round unanimous decision to Hiroki Hanabusa. The other draw on his record was an eight-round affair with Mugicha Nakagawa in 2023.
Nery is a 30-year-old southpaw who has an impressive mark of 35-2 with 27 Ko’s and has boxed 181 rounds since making his pro debut in 2012. He stands 5-feet-5-inches tall with a 65-inch reach, so gives up 4.5 inches in height and 5.5-inches in reach to Kameda. He possesses good power in his fists as 77.1 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. His last three victories have come by knockout after going three contests without one. Nery is fan-friendly boxer who throws punches in bunches and also owns a pretty solid chin despite being dropped three times by Inoue.
He won the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight Title in September, 2020 via a unanimous decision over Aaron Alameda but was stopped in his first defence via a body shot from Brandon Figueroa in the seventh round. Nery has also captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas Bantamweight Title with a 10-round unanimous decision over Martin Casillas in 2016 and the vacant WBC Silver Bantamweight Title with a fourth-round stoppage over Raymond Tabugon in 2016 after being dropped in the first round. He stopped Shinsuke Yamanaka in the fourth round in 2017 to lift the WBC Bantamweight crown. Nery fought Yamanaka in a rematch in 2018 but came in overweight to lose the title.
However, he still managed to win the fight by second-round stoppage. He then won the vacant WBC Silver Bantamweight title again in October, 2018 with a third-round stoppage of Jason Canoy. He defended that belt with a ninth-round KO over Juan Carlos Payano in July, 2019 four months after stopping McJoe Arroyo after four rounds. Since losing to Figueroa he’s bounced back with a split decision win over Carlos Castro for the vacant WBC Silver and the WBO Intercontinental Super Bantamweight Titles, then stopped David Carmona in the third round before halting Azat Hovhannisyan in the 11th round and Froilan Saludar in the second before being dismantled by Inoue.
Prediction…
Nery is a hard-hitting and exciting boxer who will be fighting at home while Kameda is fighting outside of his homeland for the first time and is taking a big step up in class. Nery has certainly fought tougher opposition as a pro and Kameda has yet to take on a world-ranked contender. Kameda has a big height and reach advantage will he needs to use to keep Nery at bay but I think Nery eventually work his way inside and do enough to pull out a win. .
Nery is aggressive with the power to end a fight with one punch.
