Thurman hasn’t fought in three years as his last fight came in February, 2022 when he beat Mario Barrios by a 12-round unanimous decision. In fact, that has been his only fight since dropping a 12-round split decision to Manny Pacquiao in July, 2019 for his lone career loss. Jarvis last saw action in December when he stopped Adrien Rodriguez in the fourth round.

My Pick
The 36-year-old Thurman will enter the ring with an impressive record of 30-1 with 22 Kos. He won his welterweight title via a unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero in March, 2015 and defended it against Luis Collazo with a seventh round stoppage, Shawn Porter by unanimous decision, Danny Garcia by split decision and Josesito Lopez by majority decision before losing to Pacquiao. He also took Garcia’s WBC world title when he beat him in 2017.
Thurman’s a skilled boxer/puncher who combines speed and power to produce a fan-friendly style. He’s got enough power to stop most opponents and the boxing skill to win decisions if he has to go the distance. He’s not known as a KO artist, but 73.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However, he’s gone the distance in his last five outings and hasn’t halted anybody since stopping Collazo back in 2015.
Thurman possesses an effective jab which he often doubles or triples up on. He likes to back his foe up with the jab and then unleash power shots or quick combinations to the head and body. He’s also an effective counterpuncher and an intelligent boxer overall who can throw punches from a wide variety of angles. His hardest shot is the left hook and his mobility makes him one of boxing’s best at the moment.
He’s not the easiest guy to hit, and so far his chin has appeared to be pretty solid but Lopez did appear to have him hurt in 2019 and Pacquiao scored a flash knockdown against him in the first round the same year. Thurman has boxed 172 rounds since turning pro in 2007 following an excellent amateur career that saw him reportedly go 101-6 with half of those losses coming to Demetrius Andrade. He stands just over 5-feet-9-inches tall with a reach of 69 inches.
Thurman has also won a few regional and minor titles since turning pro including the WBO NABO Super Welterweight Championship as well as the WBO Inter-Continental Welterweight Title. He’s 5-1 in world title fights with 1 KO and is 8-1 against former or current world champions with 3 Ko’s. He’s also beaten Julio Diaz, Jesus Soto-Karass, Diego Chaves and Carlos Quintana.
The 27-year-old Jarvis enters the ring with a fine mark of 22-1 with 20 Ko’s. He turned pro in 2015 as a teenager and has just 64 rounds of experience under his belt since. He measures 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 68.5-inch reach so gives up just half an inch in reach and height to Thurman. What’s noticeable about Jarvis is his power as 91 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s gone the distance just twice in his career.
He was forced to go the full six rounds in his pro debut when he beat Ekkawit Thongmee on points over six rounds and he beat Enesto Saulong via a 10-round unanimous decision in 2019 for the vacant IBF Asia Oceania Super Bantamweight Title. Jarvis captured the vacant WBC Asian Silver Bantamweight Crown in 2018 and added the vacant IBF Youth Super Bantamweight Belt in 2019. He also won the vacant WBO Global, and IBF Pan Pacific Featherweight Titles by stopping Mark Schleibs in the fifth round in 2020.
Jarvis wasn’t quite finished there though as he added the vacant IBF Pan Pacific Super Featherweight and IBF Inter-Continental Lightweight Belts in 2021 as he continued to move up in weight. His lone career loss came in October, 2022 when he challenged Liam Paro for the WBO Global Super Lightweight Title but was stopped in just 149 seconds. Jarvis weighed in at 140 lbs for the Paro fight and then jumped to 144.5 and 158.75 lbs in his last two outings.
Prediction…
Thurman’s inactivity definitely won’t help him as this is just his eighth fight in the past 10 years, the first in three years and just the second in six years. There’s always a chance that he could get caught cold early on, like he was against Pacquiao, especially against a power puncher like Jarvis. Thurman’s a fine athlete though so should he get through the ring he’ll need to utilize his speed and boxing skills. This is just a 10-round fight so he needs to make sure he doesn’t fall too far behind early even though Jarvis is taking a big step up in class. This fight may be decided on determination and the willingness to throw punches and both guys usually have no problem letting their hands go. Whoever takes the initiative is likely to be successful. Even though Thurman’s best years may be behind him, he’s definitely got the experience, skills and power to handle Jarvis. I’ll still give the edge to Thurman based on that but Jarvis has the power to pull off an upset.
An interesting fight which Thurman should find a way to win.
