Former IBF/WBA/WBO Lightweight Champion George Kambosos Jr of Australia heads back to the ring this Saturday March 22nd against Daud Yordan of Indonesia. The 12-round junior welterweight bout from Sydney, Australia can be seen live on DAZN in most nations with the card starting about 4am ET. Kambosos last fought in May when he was stopped in the 11th round by Vasyl Lomanchenko for the vacant IBF Lightweight Title and to lose his IBO Belt. My Pick

The 31-year-old Kambosos carries around a record of 21-3 with 10 Ko’s with his first two losses coming against Devin Haney. The native of Sydney turned pro back in 2013 and has 177 rounds of experience under his belt since. He stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 68-inch reach and has average power as 47.6 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he has gone the distance in six of his last seven outings. Even though Lomachenko stopped him and he’s been dropped before. He has a decent chin.

Kambosos reportedly won 85 of his 100 amateur bouts and since turning pro has also won the IBF Pan Pacific Lightweight Title along with the Australian NSW, Australian, WBA-PABA, and WBA Oceania Lightweight Belts. Of course, his career highlight though was beating Teofimo Lopez by split decision in 2021 to capture the IBF/WBA and WBO Lightweight Belts which he managed to do by being aggressive in the ring and not being afraid to let his hands go. He then lost those belts in his next fight when he lost to Haney the first time in June 2022.

He then lost a second unanimous decision to Haney four months later. Kambosos turned pro at the age of 19 but other than Lomachenko, Haney, Lopez and Lee Selby, he hasn’t really faced many other legitimate contenders other than perhaps Mickey Bey. He’s also beaten the likes of Brandon Ogilvie, Qamil Balla, Krai Setthaphon, Jose Forero, Rey Perez and Richard Pena. In fact, arguably, the best opponent he’s shared the ring with could very well be Manny Pacquiao when sparring with the former world champion.

The 37-year-old Yordan makes the ring walk with a pro record of 43-4 with 31 Ko’s and has boxed 299 rounds since making his debut way back in 2005 as a teenager. He measures 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 68-inch wingspan, so is two inches shorter than Kambosos. As far as power is concerned, Yordan is pretty solid as 72.1 per cent of his victories have been by stoppage. He’s fought mainly in Asia but has made a few road trips throughout his career.

Yordan’s first loss came at the hands of former IBF Super Bantamweight Champiin Celestino Caballero by 12-round unanimous decision in 2010. He dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to Chris John in 2011 and was stopped in the 12th round by Simpiwe Vetyeka in a shot at the IBO Featherweight Title in 2023. His last loss came in 2018 when Anthony Crolla beat him via a 12-round unanimous decision. As a pro, Yordan has won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth, the IBO Asia Pacific and IBO World Featherweight Titles.

He’s also won the IBO, WBO African, WBO Asia Pacific, and WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Belts as well as the WBO Oriental, IBA, WBA Asian Silver Junior Welterweight Titles. His biggest wins have been against Antonio Meza, Frankie Archuleta, Lorenzo Villenueva, Daniel Brizuela, Maxwell Awuku, Cristian Coria, Pavel Malikov and Panya Uthok. Yordan is relatively unknown to most boxing fans but has won numerous belts and has a wealth of experience.

Prediction…

Kambosos is more of a blue-collar fighter but lacks solid power. He’s not afraid to let his hands go and wins most of his fights on sheer determination. Yordan is 37 years old now but Kambosos is stepping up in weight. If Yordan was in his prime I think he’d give Kambosos all he can handle and beating him wouldn’t be out of the question either. In fact a Yordan victory this weekend wouldn’t really come as a shock anyway. I’ll give the edge to Kambosos however since he’s fighting at home and has fought the tougher opposition recently. There’s a good chance it takes him all 12 rounds though.

A close call with Kambosos having the edge.
