My Pick
The 34-year-old Warrington of Leeds enters the contest with a record of 31-4-1 with 8 Ko’s. The eight stoppages may mean he doesn’t appear to be blessed with too much power either but his last two wins have come by way of TKO. However, he’s won just two of his last seven fights with four losses and a draw and just 25.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. Warrington first won the IBF title when he beat Lee Selby by split decision in May, 2018 and then defended it against Carl Frampton by unanimous decision in December and Kid Galahad by split decision in June, 2019.
He then stopped Sofiane Takoucht in the second round but gave up the belt as he didn’t want to face Galahad again in a mandatory defence. He faced Mauricio Lara in his next two fights and was stopped in the ninth round in February, 2021 for his first loss as a pro. He faced Lara in a rematch seven months later but the bout was declared a no-decision in the second round when Lara suffered a cut over his left eye from an accidental headbutt. Warrington regained the title in March, 2022 when he halted Kiko Martinez in the seventh round but lost it nine months later to Luis Alberto Lopez via majority decision.
Warrington stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 67-inch and has boxed 280 rounds since making his pro debut in 2009 following his amateur career. He’s also captured several regional and minor titles since turning pro including the English, British, Commonwealth, European and WBC International Featherweight Titles. He’s fought all of his bouts in his homeland with his most recognizable foes so far being Cacace, Wood, Lopez, Lara, Martinez, Galahad, Frampton, Selby, Patrick Hyland, Rendall Munroe, Martin Lindsay, Hisashi Amagasa and Dennis Ceylan.
The 31-year-old Khan climbs through the ropes with a mark of 19-6-1 with 6 Ko’s and has 146 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2011 as a teenager. He measures just over 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 67.5-inch reach so has a minimal half-inch edge in height and reach on Warrington. As far as power goes, Khan doesn’t have much of it either as 26.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s gone the distance in his past five contests.
Along with losing to Conlan, Khan also lost his first two pro bouts to Wuling Ma by a four-round majority decision in 2011 and to Sirichai Thaiyen via a fourth-round KO in 2012. He didn’t fight again until 2016 and his lone draw was a four-round affair with Sunil Siwach in 2017. Khan didn’t lose again until 2022 when he dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Defry Palulu. He also lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Louie Lynn the same year in a shot at the vacant WBC International Featherweight Title.
His next defeat came at the hands of former world champion Can Xu, when he was stopped in the fifth round on New Year’s Ever, 2023. Khan won the vacant IBO Oceania-Orient Featherweight Crown in 2019 via an eight-round unanimous decision over Aiman Abu Bakar. Khan also fought to a no-contest with Larry Abarra in 2018.
Prediction…
Warrington has definitely hit a rough patch in his career with four defeats, a draw and just one win in his last six fights and three straight losses. He obviously needs a boost in confidence if he’s going to continue with his career and that’s why he’s facing Khan. That’s also why Khan squared off against Michael Conlan last month. I’m expecting Warrington to get back on the winning track this weekend but there’s a good chance the fight goes the distance.
Warrington’s experience and superior skills should lead to victory.
